    Does Obama really think he's

Lincoln and thus following Lincoln's tracks to the White House?

So he thinks he is the messiah, Lincoln, geez, who's next? Rev. Right? Osama?

He's going to be a bigger disaster than I thought. $1 Trillion bailout. Openly gays in the military. Crooks for his cabinet. Clinton retreads.

    Yeah buddy, change!

This isn't a moment of self-congratulation. A man who could have been a slave in this country 150 years ago is sworn in as the president on the same bible used by the man who emancipated the slaves.

Some people just don't have a mind for poetry. This is a poetic gesture.

I think it's pretty cool to imagine MLK on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, looking east across the Mall toward the Capitol giving his I Have a Dream Speech, and seeing Barack Obama on the steps of the Capitol, looking west toward the Lincoln Memorial as he begins his inaugural address. "My fellow Americans...."

Obama is going to be in for some very tough sledding, but I wish him well and I'm glad I've lived to see this unfold.

            Conversation with my nine-year-old:

me: "How fitting that Obama is being sworn in on Martin Luther King Day."

            "Why, mom?"

"Well, what was Martin Luther King famous for?"

            "He died."

"Okay, but why did they kill him? What was it he was doing when he died?"

            "Talking."

Does he come to the rescue when people scream "onomatopoeia!" in the middle of the night?

                      It's one expensive gesture.

The man can throw a party. It's nice to see a President unite Hollywood.

You are talking about the pre-inaugural gala I watched on HBO last night?

Expensive compared to what? Your ward's x-mas party? Agreed. But it isn't expensive considering how many thousands of citizens have flown to DC from all over the world to celebrate this historic moment.

Architectural theorists borrow a French term, bienséance, to discuss the relationship of a building's form to its function. Literally translated the word means 'propriety.' Its critical use isn't very different than the literal translation -- the scale of things should fit the purpose, which is why Greek columns on a person's home is tacky.

So how about the bienséance of Obama's pre-inaugural? If I, like several of Little Robin's classmates, had traveled to DC at great personal expense, I don't think a little outdoor concert in the park would seem out of scale among the sea of people filling the mall.
