  • Here's my support for Obama thread

    1. Keeping the pressure up in Afghanistan/Pakistan, leading to the arrest of Taliban numero dos.

    2. Making nuclear power a viable option for the future.

I don't think either item will endear him to the far left. Let's see if he can keep up the move in the right direction -- like scrapping the proposed healthcare reform and starting from scratch.

Add forming a bipartisan commission on deficit reduction. Even if it's only for looks, it looks good.

Unlike many of the rest of my conservative brethren, I don't think Obama is evil or an idiot. I actually like him more than Clinton, though I think Clinton was better for the economy, because I think he actually has principles. My problem with Obama is that I disagree with his principles. I think smaller government is better than bigger government.

I haven't followed this one closely. Why are the republicans blocking the formation of the commission. Someone said this morning because the commission was just cover for raising taxes.

If the commission was truly bi-partisan and they said to get out of this mess we have to raise taxes, well we have to raise taxes. Now if the commission came out with just raising taxes as the solution, then I would smell a rat. However, why not try and see what they come up with.

I would be skeptical, but I'm giving it a chance because Al Simpson is the co-chair of the commission.

I would want to see who else is on the commission. I still have a lot of respect for Al Simpson, however I know he has been hanging out up at Harvard and that could corrupt someone's thinking over time.

He didn't get accepted to Harvard, but that's okay because the university he ended up at was better than any Ivy League school.

My bad. For some reason I thought he was currently associated in some way with Harvard.

I think he is a great family man. I will be shocked if I ever find out he is a Kennedy or Clinton type.

I have no animosity toward him, I just have vastly different views of the role of government.

It will be interesting to see what how the passage of the health care bill affects his presidency. One of his problems until at least recently was that he seemed to be acting more as a mediator between warring factions (both within his party and the broader Congress) than a real leader. With a big win under his belt, he's likely to come forward more as a leader than a referee, but he might let it go to his head and assume there are mandates where none exist.
