    Some good news from Afghanistan...

The commander, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, is an Afghan described by American officials as the most significant Taliban figure to be detained since the American-led war in Afghanistan started more than eight years ago. He ranks second in influence only to Mullah Muhammad Omar, the Taliban’s founder, and was a close associate of Osama bin Laden before the Sept. 11 attacks.

An honest (non-drive by) question: Is the US is letting him be held by Pakistani intelligence for interrogation in order to side step their public separation from W/Cheney on interrogation tactics?

The war against terror has been droning on for years, so it's easy for the latest headlines to get lost in the shuffle. But last weekend the U.S. began a major attack on the Taliban's alleged largest stronghold in Afghanistan, so it's nice that they have something to show for it. Maybe they actually received good intelligence on this one.

It looks as if the CIA/Pakistani's had this guy since Thursday, but the Times didn't report it at the request of the WH. I'm sure the current offensive took months to plan, but the timing of the two events is probably not coincidence.

What I hope is that whatever relationships/techniques yielded this capture that they can continue to leverage that to get Omar and Bin Laden.

Yes, I realize that's probably very wishful thinking.

We would have both by now if the Pakistanis were not hiding them and talking about of both sides of their mouths.
