  • Rahm Emanuel getting some heat from WSJ

I found this article interesting. It seems that some in the WH and legislatures were looking to put out some ads that would of targeted Conservative Dems.. But Rahm axed the idea calling it "F'ing Retarded" (Now I wonder how many legs that comment will get..)..

I think he was right in telling them that was a stupid idea. It does add validity to the idea that Obama has some very far left liberals in his WH and there seems to be added tension that he is not following through on what they expected him to do and blaming Rahm for this..

So Obama makes fun of participants in the Special Olympics and Rahm now throws around the "retarded" tagline.

I guess we know where special needs kids and people fit in their list of priorities.

We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Total threadjack, but here's my "retarded" story:

My friend and I were leaving school and talking about the mtn. This was back before it was on DTV, and both sides were whining about the other side's price demands. As we get to the door, I pushed it open and the hinge was loose, so it slammed into the wall. We kept walking when we heard someone behind us yell, "Hey!" We ignored her and kept walking, but she kept yelling at us about how we needed to be careful. I was getting really annoyed so I turned around to say something, but I could instantly tell that she was mentally handicapped. I let her tell me to be careful and not damage the building or the door. I apologized, and my friend and I kept walking.

About 25 yards away, in response to something my friend said, I said, "That's so retarded." From at least 1/3 of the parking lot away (this was in the lot to the west of the JRCB--we went north, she went south) the girl with sonic hearing yelled, "HEY!!!" She stomped over to me and gave me a five minute lecture on the word retarded which included one heck of a guilt trip. I apologized profusely and assured her that I meant no offense, and that I would be careful in what words I selected. My friend was behind me laughing the entire time as he watched this 5'0" girl chew me out. Now it's his favorite story to tell, and he makes fun of me whenever he possibly can.
      Not that, sickos.

This is something the disability community takes very seriously. I wonder if my disability advocates I work with will go crazy over this. I have a feeling they will let it slide like they did for Obama..

But I have gotten a tutorial at work when I first got there on "People Fist Language"..

I have found this out as well. I agree with them also. The word retarded is fine if used appropriately but it does bug me when people use it to describe something as dumb or stupid.

It would be akin to labeling something as "gay" to connotate that it is dumb or stupid.

The thread highjack is partially my fault. Feel free to get back to Rahm "it down your throat" Emmanuel.

All it really means is that they want the word "People/Person"used before any connection to the word disability.

So.. "People with disabilities" rather then "Handicapped person" or "Disabled".. They are trying to get away from the old stereo-type verbiage that has plagued the disability community for a very long time. They want to be considered "People first" and their disability as secondary...

              Hopefully that answers your question..
