SLC selected as one of four finalist for 2012 RNC

SALT LAKE CITY — The next Republican presidential nominee could be named in Utah.

After four months of study, the GOP has selected Salt Lake City as one of four finalists for the 2012 Republican National Convention, an event that could bring 30,000 people to the state for several days.

The other finalists will be announced early next week, and the winner will be selected in late summer after GOP officials visit each city.

For Republicans who want Mitt to beat Obama in '12, having the RNC in SLC is a bad idea IMO; Romney's religion will already be focused on enough without the convention being held in Utah.

I thought it was fun to have the games being here, but I never went downtown to attend any of the events. I needed to go for business reasons.For that reason, I did hate the inconvenience more than liked that the games were here.

I also quibble with the idea that he's not in the firing line. China-U.S. relations are at their most tense since the spy plane incident and they don't look to be much better in the next couple of years. If he chose to ran, look for the blame to be thrown at him for any problem relating to China.

If he's serious about running then he'll have to quit his job and assemble a team by the November elections, at the very latest. That would mean he did his job as ambassador for a year then packed up. It's a bad message to send that he's quit two jobs over a short period of time in his quest for higher office.

I would be shocked if he threw his hat in the 2012 ring.

ambassadors are nowhere near cabinet members in terms of administration members.

Clinton has already indicated she's not returning. The china tensions increase his importance and his opportunity. look, i don't know the guy, i'm just saying lots of people are talking about him running and they tend to be smart and informed. i believe they are making educated guesses but i'll side with them.
