  • Officials Hid Truth of Immigrant Deaths in Jail

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/10/us/10detain.html?hp

Hopefully this Times article will be a catalyst for the President to sic the AG on this system and prosecute the corrupt and restore a sense of decency and humanity to our treatment of these people. They aren't detainees, they are human beings. The Bah case is particularly sickening.

There are few things more callous than debating what to do with a dying man so that your job will be easier. I wonder if Bah's family has any grounds for a law suit against the prison officials for a violation of his civil rights. 13 hours lying dying in a jail cell while they debate what to do with you so they don't have to pay for your care.....man. It's wrong to wish pain on someone else, but I struggle with not wanting Fortuna to spin her wheel on these people.

Is there a specific US law that governs the rights of immigration detainees? I mean, are they housed in jail cells? Is it more like the interment camps we subjected Japanese-American citizens to during the Second World War? Technically, these people are guilty of a civil matter, like a parking ticket, as their "crime" isn't anything criminal. It's my understanding of the law, and basic human decency, that anyone in the US has civil rights. I hope the AG responds to this article with decisive action. I may actually write my senator over this--not that I have much faith in the South Carolina government these days (Mark Sanford, Joe Wilson). Sheesh.

This should be a huge deal. I can't believe no one's talking about this.

Disgusting. ICE needs to be held accountable and have transparent procedures. Instead they frequently act with impunity and deliberately mislead and obfuscate.

      Thanks for the link.

Perhaps the american people are tired of immigration stories, whether legal or illegal.

Just a thought. That would be my guess.
