While this is mostly true, it depends on what part you're talking about. SLC is a more liberal city now that people give it credit for. While in general the state is still overwhelmingly conservative, SLC itself hasn't elected a Republican Mayor for as long as I can remember, and Jim Matheson has served been in Congress for I believe it's going on his 3rd consective term now.Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostMinnesota is worse than Utah. They will really vote for anyone other than a Republican.
Not the greatest of examples I know, but there are pockets of SLC that are definetly more liberal. Especially downtown and the Sugarhouse areas.

You're right on that. Though Matheson, who is going on his fifth term, is one of the most conservative Dems in Congress he'll keep that seat as long as he wants it. It also doesn't hurt that the GOP can't find a decent candidate to throw at him.Originally posted by RockyBalboa View PostWhile this is mostly true, it depends on what part you're talking about. SLC also has two homosexual members of the state legislature in Scott McCoy and Jackie Biskupski. There was another one from Logan, but his orientation wasn't known until he was caught soliciting oral sex from a police officer in 2003. He not only lost his seat in the legislature, but his calling as Stake President.
But outside of SLC, Park City, Moab and Price, Utah is solid GOP.

When I lived in Utah County, I often wondered why they even had local elections after the primaries.Originally posted by RobinFinderson View PostSure, only 49.999% would ever consider voting Republican. And Matheson voted for the stimulus package against the wishes of his constituency. He is gonzo after this term. He talks conservative but when it comes to voting, he's going to be loyal to his party vs. his constituency.Originally posted by YOhio View PostYou're right on that. No, he'll get re-elected. The Utah GOP can't find anyone who can beat Matheson for the 2nd district seat. He's no different than any other politician - be it Republican or Democrat - when it comes to ignoring constituency and toeing the line. Besides, when the Repubs had the district boundaries redrawn, they tossed out Park City but kept SLC and added Carbon and Grand Counties - two traditional Democrat strongholds - so they most likely added more Democrat supporters and therefore increased the number of people who are more likely to support Obama's socialism.Originally posted by Hallelujah View PostAnd Matheson voted for the stimulus package against the wishes of his constituency. IOW, to use my favorite zoob maxim, they beat themselves. (And again, for YOhio, this means whatever you want it to mean.
