  • Easy solution for USPS' multi-billion dollar deficit

    http://www.ksl.com/?nid=153&sid=8694060

"The post office is required to make an annual contribution of about $5 billion to pay in advance for medical benefits for future retirees." Quit making the payment!

Why should taxpayers pay for their medical benefits when they retire? Can't they simply get on Medicare? Of course not, Medicare is only for the 'common' folk of the US. The fed employees have their own medical program that the rest of us get to pay for.

But then again, they would qualify for the universal healthcare plan once that passes. Or we they still want their own, because Medicare and universal healthcare plans suck?!

The solution (not yours) is easy, but executing that solution is nearly impossible.

The best solution is to shut down a lot of the USPS branches that are in the middle of nowhere. It is cost prohibitive to have them all open. I say shut them down and change the mail delivery to residences to every other day or three days a week.

How much of your personal mail is so crucial that you need it delivered everyday? Often times I let my mail stack up for 3 or 4 days before I go get it. After this wait it usually consists of 5 credit card offers, 5 car insurance quotes, lots of CPE brochures, stacks of coupon books and other junk, and maybe one bill (which only comes because the payee is not setup for online payment).

Why isn't this done? Because it will cut jobs from the USPS and is a sure fire way for a state representative to not get reelected.

I am not sure about the rural post offices, you may be right to shut them down. I think that going to 7 day mail delivery would be better than limited mail delivery. Monday's and day after holiday's are the longest days, and it would make route evaluations shorter. Meaning less pay per route.

Yes. Especially with taxpayer money. Who does the government think they are playing Monopoly with our money? Forgot, union contracts. How silly of me.

                USPS bleeding more than ever...

The Postal Service on Thursday reported a record $15.9 billion net loss for the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, bringing the financially troubled agency another step closer to insolvency.
and as for paying for the healthcare costs of their future retirees...

The widely expected loss, more than triple the service’s loss last year, included accounting expenses of $11.1 billion related to two payments that the agency was supposed to make into its future retiree health benefits fund. But because of revenue losses, the post office was for the first time forced to default on these payments, which were due in August and October. Nearly $5 billion in other losses were because of a decline in revenue from mailing operations. The agency also reached its $15 billion borrowing limit from the Treasury.

Why can't we just get rid of the post office and let the market decide what it's worth to send all those Tuesday afternoon coupons?

I live in an extremely rural part of America that has no home delivery. I thought I wouldn't be able to handle it, but it has been just fine.

Why do every other day delivery? Get rid of delivery entirely.

The USPS is a great argument in favor of repealing Obamacare. This is what happens when the government is in charge.

I'm not seeing the similarities between the two.

The similarity is that both are run by the government.

                              Ding! Ding! Ding!

You have stumbled on the REAL reason for Obamacare and our move to a single-payer/socialized medicine model - it's a HUGE payoff to unions. Unions have tens (hundreds?) of billions of dollars saved up to pay for the future medical care of their retirees. If the government is ultimately going to be the payer, the unions are off the hook. That frees up a shitload of money to mismanage and/or embezzle.

In a nutshell, Obamacare is really all about a gigantic payoff to unions. Period. Always has been. Always will be.
