  • John Allen Muhammad to be executed Tuesday morning

We were living in the D.C. area during the shooting spree. Very strange time, very eery. I drove past the Home Depot in Falls Church everyday where Muhammad had Malvo shoot one victim. They were both arrested at a rest stop only 10 minutes from our home. They'd been camping out at the rest stop. Just gassing up the car was an anxious experience.

Sad story about the father of one of the victims.

Awaiting the end for daughter's killer
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

This is one instance where I think the death penalty is clearly the right thing to do.

Also, being sniped would be a horrible way to go (although Fournier's Gangrene still ranks as the worst way to go in my book).

If it's a head shot, I can think if a lot worse ways to go. In this case, you're minding your own business and bam! you're dead. No suffering, no pain, no anticipation... you've just moved on.

But no time to prepare or say your goodbyes.

That's true. There are tradeoffs involved.

My (future) wife and I were living in Alexandria at the time. I remember going into the district and seeing people weaving back and forth in broad daylight, presumably to throw off the marksman's aim.

I remember the insane traffic jams as cops stopped everyone driving a white van or minivan (even though this tip was wrong). People who started with half of a tank ran out of gas while idling.

I also remember gassing up behind huge plywood barricades that shielded the vehicle from view.

            Crazy times.
