  • I've never watched Anderson Cooper...

...his show never really appealled to me. Probably because it seems to always be 2 hours long and he looks like a 25 year old man with gray hair.

But in any case, I think this quote is very telling:

Mr. Cooper had 211,000 viewers to 223,000 for Mr. Olbermann’s repeat. That meant Mr. Cooper finished fourth and last in the 10 p.m. hour because, besides being well behind the leader, Greta Van Susteren, who had 538,000 viewers, he was also beaten by a repeat of Nancy Grace’s 8 p.m. show on HLN, which averaged 222,000.
He wasn't just beat by Nancy Grace, but it was a repeat of Nancy Grace's show. WOW!

Just to be fair... it's not like we're talking about a syndicated repeat of Seinfeld or Married... With Children. All the news channels broadcast the same daily interview shows multiple times per day. It's not like he lost to an episode of M*A*S*H* on Nick at Nite or something.

Nevertheless, his numbers suck. Being who he is, though, with his background, I commend him for his work ethic and his drive.

Why people watch Nancy Grace is beyond me. I want to punch her in the face every time she accidentally comes on my TV while I flip through channels.

I understand what you are saying but it's not like we are talking about Larry King here. We are talking about Nancy Freakin' Grace! This is the lady who every time I see an ad for her show I swear it's the same show with the same story over and over again.

I can't think of a talking head I despise more than Nancy Grace. What kind of person watches that program?

I don't understand why people watch any of the news channels anymore.

Until about 10 years ago CNN was great and I watched it regularly. But when Fox News came along and stole the ratings with crappy sensationalism, all the news networks went down hill.

I haven't watched more than a minute of those channels in years except for election night results.

Luckily there are some good resources on the internet and PBS to fill the void.

I actually think that out of all the cable news shows out there, AC360 does the best job. There are some segments that they have on there that I think are a little hokey, but Anderson seems to have a pretty fair amount of control over his show and tries to keep the sensationalism out as much as he can. He also will stop the conversation if guests are talking over each other, which I greatly appreciate. I can't stand the O'Rilley formula of having guests shout at each other.

                    Sure I appreciate spin.

Watching the No Spin Zone is like watching your washer as it goes through the wash cycle.

I think that kind of illustrates that quality programming is going to continue to diminish as it seems the general public isn't interested in it.

The mere fact that John and Kate are superstars pretty much solidifies your point.

People like to hear their point of view expressed on tv so they watch the programs that say what they want to hear.

This is what I believe. However, some say certain news broadcasters are brainwashing their viewers.

I think people just watch what they agree with.

I have probably said this before but anyone interested in actual news reporting as opposed to news analysis (which is what 90% of what cable "news" channels do now) should tune into BBC America on cable or on Xm radio. Just give it a listen and it will quickly dawn on you that the other stuff isn't straight news.

I'm curious as to your definition of "straight news."
