Just to get an idea of how many people we may have participate and what activities will be done, please take a second a check your preference. If your answer is "Other", please specify in the thread what you would be doing.

Is there a reason why we have to choose a specific type of exercise for the challenge or can we change the poll to allow multiple answers?
Once the marathon is over in October, I'll be pretty evenly split between cycling and running for the rest of the year.

I voted running, but I will be doing about 60-40 with cycling until my weight loss goals are met."The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

The main reason for the poll is to gauge overall interest in the challenge, and determine what activities need to have ratios defined. So for instance, if no one says Stairmaster, we won't worry about defining a ratio.Originally posted by bluegoose View PostIs there a reason why we have to choose a specific type of exercise for the challenge or can we change the poll to allow multiple answers?

But you make a good point, since some people may/will do several activities. I guess if you plan on doing a significant amount of more than one activity, just specify that in a reply, like you and JIC have done.

Maybe we could do a rough exercise equivalency table using MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task).
We'd have to agree on assumptions such as average participant weight and average effort, but the MET has been calculated for darn near every exercise or sport one can imagine.
I'm sure Indy or someone could calculate the equivalency ratios for the spreadsheet log calcs.Last edited by Katy Lied; 08-16-2009, 05:18 PM.

I think I posted running, but I'll be doing cycling.Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I voted elliptical, but I am also trying to learn how to swim laps for distance. I have tried it a couple of times and don't have endurance yet. I am also working on my form....starting with the basics. I want to keep at it, so hopefully by Fall I will be able to swim a mile or two as well as do the machine.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I wouldn't know the effect on my body. I am barely doing 1/4 mile. And when I say barely, I am being generous. It is tough. I think it will take me awhile to build up my endurance for a mile swim.Originally posted by nikuman View PostSwimming a mile kills me.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Swimming is rough for me. My buddy and I are planning on doing an Ironman at some point, and late last year we had 2010 as a goal. So I started swimming and quickly realized that even 2 years wasn't going to be long enough training.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI wouldn't know the effect on my body. I hear you. I suck at it. I love "swimming" casually....goofing around in the pool or the ocean. But there is a huge difference between casual pool fun and trying to swim 18 proper laps.Originally posted by Teenage Dirtbag View PostSwimming is rough for me. I am doing it as an alternate form of low-impact cardio, so I don't really plan on getting to your level of distinction. But with all your running, I would be surprised if you didn't transition well to swimming for distance. Your lungs are already strong, and you definitely have the legs (rowrrrr!)Fitter. Happier. well, especially when you consider that in an Iron like TD's talking, you're not going to be doing laps - it's going to be an open swim. Which means no walls.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI hear you. I suck at it. I love "swimming" casually....goofing around in the pool or the ocean. Exactly. You can't just stand up when you get tired, because the bottom is 30 feet (or more) below you.Originally posted by Babs View Postwell, especially when you consider that in an Iron like TD's talking, you're not going to be doing laps - it's going to be an open swim. Which means no walls.
