  • Another question for the docs

I have some tendonitis in my left foot that flares up from time to time, usually after a lot of use (this time from a 5 mile hike on Saturday). The podiatrist said it's an "overuse" injury. As a fat guy trying to lose weight, this is a catch-22 (I've even had issues after a long bike ride due to the pressure).

I just take naproxen and stay off it for a day or so and it usually clears up. Anything else I could/should be doing either preventive or treatment wise?

I'm not a doc, but I've had tendonitis in my knees my whole life. I used to play a lot of basketball and found that the most effective strategy was to take Aleve (Naproxyn) about half an hour before I played and then ice my knees immediately after playing.

Pre and post activity treatments are good. For me, when you are looking at an overuse injury, but wanting to exercise still, take up swimming for a few weeks. Allow the injury to heal fully, yet still get your aerobic work out.

Good strategy, but swimming usually requires the use of public pools, which means competing for pool time with young children and geriatrics -- the two most bladder-challenged demographics out there. No thanks, I'll take my chances with the elliptical machine.

Ellipticals work as well. In simple terms: low/no impact
