Just curious if any of you use recumbent bikes for exercise (mostly during winter time). Is it good exercise, any suggestions on what to look for?

I am slowly building up my exercise equipment for our house:
    **some free weights.
    **Rowing machine
    **Treadmill
    **Stair Stepper

Now, I am looking at adding a bike. If you have any thoughts, let me know.

Do you own a road or mountain bike? If so, you can always get a fluid trainer.

I do, but I am not a rider by any means. I am basically looking to get an exercise bike for exercise not for improving my riding skills.

Drunk Tank bought a recumbent bike for his wife.

It is now a clothes hanger.

It's a cheap way to make your regular bike turn into an exercise bike. I don't think it improves your riding skills.

I wondered the same thing when I saw the thread title.

I bought this and it works great for the price. Doesn't mean it is any fun, but it works and is fairly quiet. Good for those winter evenings.

                      I bought this one:

Used it all winter. Boy, was I glad to get outdoors in the spring.

My dad purchased this for my mother. She's had a total knee replacement in one knee, a partial in the other and had her rotator cuff repaired. She's paying the price for a very athletic, active youth. The recumbent bike is really all she can do for exercise. My dad has built a home gym in the basement. Smooth Fitness elliptical, Schwinn recumbent bike, and a smith machine and bench with all the free weights you could lift.

It's great I just got done working out on it. 15.1 miles at 198 watts and 22.1 mph average. Took me just over 40 minutes. It has hand sensor HRM. I wanted to see how accurate it was so last week I rode twice with my garmin 305. It was within 1 bpm. I was shocked. It's very sturdy. It's quiet. The programs are great. I usually do a calorie goal workout. That's what I did tonight. Set it for 600 calories and let it count down as I did one of the programs. It's a great workout and a nice piece of equipment to use along with the elliptical to add to my outdoor runs. I use it 2-3 times a week.

                        I highly recommend it.

I bought one about 7 years ago before I got addicted to running, when I was fat. I liked it. It was quiet, you can watch tv while you work out and it's better for your ass than an upright bike. Now it's in my garage. If you want to take and afternoon and drive up to Boise, I'll give it to you.

Would it fit inside a Toyota Corolla?

I spoke too soon. My wife says we should keep it for my daughter's physical therapy.
