  • So, you guys were right about

the Garmin 305. That thing is awesome.

Got it in the mail yesterday. I took it on my run this morning. Wonderful. Lighter than I thought. Auto-lap and auto-pause are really good features.

In related news, I was right about my iPod. It shorts my distance. The Garmin had me at 6.11 miles at an 8:20 pace. The iPod had me at 5.86 miles at an 8:43 pace. There's a little bit of play because I stopped the iPod a bit later, but that's still not cool. Sounds like calibration time.

Sea Chicken and Teenage Dirtbag are going to laugh at me, but I am probably the least lightweight runner you'll ever find. I am now running with (get this) my Garmin, my heartrate strap, my iPod (complete with heavy Bose earphones) and a fuel belt (it's too hot to run anything past 2 miles in Houston right now).
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

Mine arrived in Oregon yesterday (had it sent to my parents house) and I'll be picking it up next week. Can't wait to use it. I've decided not to purchase another sensor for my Nike+ as the Garmin will do everything I need. Also, I think it's ridiculous that Nike wont make a model with a replaceable battery and wants me to purchase a $20-$30 sensor each year.

I use mine every day. It is great.

I'm not mentioning this to many people, but given that I ran my half marathon training in about 2'00" flat (when accounting for stupid Nike+ undercounting miles) and given that I was intentionally holding back on that run, I'm hopeful that I'll be able to run the actual marathon in under 4'00". We'll see how training goes. I'm trying to get my pace more consistent - today I ran the first mile in about 8:50 but the last mile in 7:20. Something is wrong with that.

That really is amazing considering how long you have been doing this. Did you run previously in your life?

I also am bad at keeping a consistent pace, but mine is more that I start good, do well in the middle, but then fade at the end. I don't have the mental toughness to keep pushing when I get tired. I did run 8 miles last saturday in under 1 hour, which I was really proud of. But those last 2 miles involved some walking when I hit the shade.

I used to run track in HS. I was a long distance runner. So I have some training and experience. I wasn't very good, but I did used to run 6 min/mile over 2 and 3 miles distances. 8 miles was probably the longest I ever ran at one time, and not at that pace. But I did learn how to push myself when I played football, so I have that going for me.

This thread convinced me to order one of my own, and I used it for the first time Saturday. I can't wait to race myself on routes I've already done, but I'll have to wait a bit as I don't intend to repeat Saturday's route for a long, long while.

After using it once, I can't believe I haven't been using a heart-rate monitor before now.

I finally get to use mine on Saturday when I do my 4th of July 10k in Ashland. I feel like a kid at Christmas. Is it fairly easy to set up and use? I'm not going to have a lot of time to read the manual that day.
