  • Fitness apps and devices

I searched "fitness apps" and "running apps" and didn't find the thread I'm looking for, so I'm going to risk the wrath of DH and start a new one.
What fitness apps do you guys like and why?
My impressions on a few (with the limited amount of times I've tried them--correct me if I'm wrong):

    1) MapMyRun -
    Pros - Biggest database
Cons - Can't see splits from the mobile app
    2) Strava -
Pros - Segments/achievements, seems to be the new one people are using
Cons - No way to log temp or effort on a run, awkward display
    3) Runtastic (Pro--I got it for $.99 a while ago)-
    Pros - Splits, best logging/display
    Cons - smaller database?

At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I like Strava, despite the drawbacks you mention. It's very motivating, and particularly with rides I've started picking a segment or two that I can PR on, which comes fairly easily given my age and modest fitness level. I'm participating in two of their many "Challenges", one to run 100K, the other to ride 600K, in the month of January. The first shouldn't be a problem, the second will be close, but in any case I'm moving more because of the site.

I've taken the liberty of changing the thread title by adding "and devices", as this is probably a good place to discuss wearables (wristbands, eyewear, headbands and other items) that include fitness- related apps. I listened to a CES recap on the radio this morning in which the resident techie spoke about Footloggers, sensor-laden insoles you'll be able to put in your running shoes and which will provide detailed analyses about your gait and offer suggestions for changes. Interestingly, they can also provide alerts and guidance with respect to early onset dementia and other mental disorders because such ailments have subtle effects on the way one walks; this can help tip you off early. I know some here have paid for gait analyses, and I've wanted to have mine done. I suspect I'll buy some Footloggers when they come out later this year, and I hope to dispel the board rumors about my Alzheimer's.
