  • Steve Larsen dies

    http://www.velonews.com/article/9223...lapsing-during

The only American to compete and win as a professional mountain biker, road cyclist and triathlete, dies during a track workout. Autopsy is still pending, but it looks like this may confirm the point that Cardiac was making a few weeks ago about high intensity workouts and cardiac events.

Left a wife and 5 young kids.

    RIP.

wow, that is scary, and very sad for his family.

This past weekend the local tri club had a time trial around the June Lake loop. The oldest member of the club, at 72 year old, started swerving on one of the descents and crashed on the shoulder. He was non responsive and ended up dying. Most likely a heart attack. Kind of a sad day for the local cycling and tri community. I am just glad I was at my wife's race this past weekend, and I wasn't at the time trial like I had planned.

It looks like it wasn't a heart attack after all. Viral? Will someone please explain how that could happen to an otherwise healthy individual?

Viral Myocarditis could cause this. The virus infects the heart muscle and renders it incapable of contracting and pumping blood and the person dies of congestive heart failure. It is rare and almost always ends in death.
"The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

"They talk about the economy this year. Hey, my hairline is in recession, my waistline is in inflation. Altogether, I'm in a depression."

"I like to bike. I could beat Lance Armstrong, only because he couldn't pass me if he was behind me."

Every one of these sudden death episodes in athletes seems to always be HCM. I would think the autopsy would show that, but we don't necessarily know that it didn't.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

They did actually end up finding that it was a heart attack caused by atherosclerosis.

Did anyone else do a double-take and think this was about Steve Largent?

                I admit it, I did

I may be small, but I'm slow.
