  • Are supplements worth it?

What kind of supplement(s), if any, do you use before, during or after a workout (including weights, runs and rides)? I use Propel on some rides, along with a lot of water, Gu and Powerbars, and I've used various things after a gym workout, but I wonder if they really provide a benefit. Currently, after doing weights, I use Aminocore, the container for which has all sort of impressive terms (Advanced Myotrophic Matrix!, Fatigue Fighting Alpha KIC!, Myotrisol and Soluble BCAA Technology, etc.). So it has to be great for me, right? Would I be just as well off by simply eating a well-balanced diet, hydrating well and eating a nutritious snack when I'm done? What do you use?

      Try Centrum Silver
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

        before workout,

        NoExplode 2.0
        Syntha-6

        After
        Syntha-6

        Bedtime
        Cellmass

I certainly feel a difference with No-Explode. First time I took that was pretty weird. You get fairly amped and a little tingly. Syntha-6 is a protein mix that is the best I have tried. Cellmass is bedtime recovery supplement. I don't have a real opinion on this one. I think I feel ok with or without it.

Do you cycle those? I have tried NO Explode before and I thought I could run through a brick wall when I took it, but I didnt like the overall feeling I had. I have liked the help that some supplements have given me like creatine, etc. but I hate the thought that I have to keep taking them. So I have elected to go without them for now.

Syntha-6 I am on 6 days a week. Cellmass has been hit and miss as I haven't really felt the difference. NOX2.0 I try to cycle off at least 3 times a week, but man there is difference in my workouts if I don't take it. Easy 10% (even higher depending on the muscle group) in the difference of weight I will lift on day on versus off.

My workout partner is 5'7 165 pounds. We have been lifting together for close to two years. His bench press started at 160 pounds. He got up to 230 pounds but plateaued. We switched up routines and tried a few other techniques but he could never break through.

In January he started using creatine and on Friday he benched 275 pounds as part of his workout. We max out again at the end of next week, I would suspect he is close to 290 pounds.

It is amazing how well that stuff works and how fast he went up. I also know if you get off you can lose those gains pretty quick. I don't use any supplements (other than protein) but the results of creatine are pretty amazing.

I had a companion who was a high jumper for BYU in the mid-90s. He used to tell stories of BYU supplying boatloads of creatine to their athletes. This was back when creatine was the next big thing.
