  • Took the family backpacking a couple of weeks ago (silver linings).

Though not many permits were available for a group our size so we opted for the Tamarack Trail out of Rock Creek Lake. Only 2.4 miles to Francis Lake where we stayed both nights. https://caltopo.com/m/8E0E

Day two we climbed Mt Morgan (that is the tallest thing in the above picture) at 13754 ft. We all made it up, even my 6 year old.

It was so nice to get out in the backcountry.

Just got permits for my wife and me for next weekend in the Minaret region and then the following week we are planning a 4 day loop to 1000 Island lake with all the kids again. Hooray summer.

I have done this mountain, great hike.
This got me wondering if they ever figured out who it was. Using DNA, they did:

A skeleton found by hikers this fall near California's second-highest peak was identified Friday as a Japanese American artist who had left the Manzanar internment camp to paint in the mountains in the waning days of World War II.

The Inyo County sheriff used DNA to identify the remains of Giichi Matsumura, who succumbed to the elements during a freak summer snow storm during a hiking trip with other members of the camp. Matsumura had apparently stopped to paint a watercolor while the other men, a group of anglers, continued toward a lake to fish.

His body wasn’t found for another month and the tragedy was overshadowed in the immediate days after his Aug. 2, 1945 disappearance when the U.S. dropped the first atomic bomb, hastening Japan’s surrender in the war. Matsumura was one of more than 1,800 detainees who died in the 10 prison camps in the West, though it's one of the more unusual deaths.

        Links not working for me.

I'm incredibly jealous. I would love to do something like that right now.

Nice. I've got a ton of memories there. My Grandpa Diddley built a road there way back in the day around Tamarack Flat, so there a lot of family history out that way.

                    • Just finished another week of backpacking solo in the South San Juan mountains in SW Colorado. Lots of rain so I had to adjust my plans but had a good time and had some luck fishing. Base camp was at Blue Lake near the Continental Divide.

My MSR Hubba Hubba tent looking up at the Continental Divide.

A few more views while traversing the divide.

                          • Nice. The San Juans are a rainy mess, but very pretty.

I just got back from a three day trip into the Ritter range of the Sierra.

                            It was awesome.

                            More details to come.

                              • There day trip out is the Beck Lakes trailhead. Really we started at Devils Postpile and headed west for about 8 miles to get right against the south part of the Ritter range.

We camped one night at Holcomb Lake. Did some cross country hiking to see Beck Lakes in a thunderstorm the first day as well.

Next day we xc'd over to Anona lake and spent the afternoon checking out Ashley Lake and other small lakes.

This morning we hiked the 7 miles Mack to our car and got some great views of the postpile.

First time in 20 years or so that my wife and I have gone backpacking by ourselves. Beautiful area and our dinners turned out pretty good for homemade dehydrated.

I think this is a pic of outlet of Holcomb Lake.
