  • Lifting Legs

How many do this? I have to say, I never do it, but I'm starting to feel like maybe I should. I guess the reason I don't is because I want to run/bike 4-5 times a week and when I lift legs the energy to do cardio just isn't there.

If you lift legs, please convince me that I should be doing it.

I started lifting legs seriously about a month ago. Prior to that, I neglected them in the gym. Nevertheless, I find that I have the best success with forcing myself to lift legs if I do it all in one day. So leg day (Tuesday, for me) consists of squats, leg extensions, leg curls, leg press, lunges, and then a massive calves burnout. It is my longest lifting day, but I am seeing results, both from an appearance standpoint as well as a performance one (basketball). On a related note, i have a goal to two-handed dunk on my 30th birthday. I haven't been able to do this since before my mission, so that's the recent motivation for my leg workouts. T-minus two months . . .

If you do nothing but cardio for your leg workouts you will plateau at a low threshold and also risk injury. So there you go.

I'm not doing cardio for a leg workout, I'm just doing it to burn fat. I don't push my legs that hard when I run/cycle. I really don't do anything to work out my legs, and that's why I'm kind of wondering if I should.

Back in the day I used to blast my legs. I naturally have massive legs though. Good genes. My dad has the biggest calves in the world. My calves aren't as big, but they have never been something I have had to exercise to bulk up. Since returning to working out, all I do is cardio circuit training type activities like lunges and squats with minimal weight.

Legs are my least favorite to exercise but squats I believe to be one of the most important exercises anyone can do.

Your workouts will probably be more effective if you run 2, bike 2, lift 2. The increased muscle mass will improve your metabolism, helping with your primary goal of burning fat. And the increased strength should improve your speed and endurance, too.

This is what I wanted to hear.

What do you mean by run 2, bike 2, lift 2?

Two days each. You implied that you couldn't fit lifting in because you want to do cardio five days a week. You may find your workouts more effective if your week is run/bike/lift/run/bike/lift/rest, or something like that. Something to consider, anyway. I'm not sure what all your goals are.

I think days. Since you said you were looking to run/ride 4-5 times a week.

don't forget to get gracey over to fitday.com

Without proper diet, all that running around is not going to help him burn the phat.

PS what fat exactly are you wanting to burn, grace? Did you balloon out over the winter? I don't recall seeing much of it at our Seattle dinner. And I was looking everywhere, trust me.

I was just reading (in Shape magazine, so take it for what it's worth) that diet is the most important part of losing weight and losing fat. A work out helps up how fast the body burns the calories we eat, but the main way to lose is to get your 1.get your diet right 2. work out
