I want to get a mountain bike. I haven't owned a bike in a long time, but would like to get back in it. I don't want a road bike because I like to ride on trails sometimes. It's not something that I'll be using all the time and I don't need anything fancy or hard core. I just want something that won't be breaking down all the time and will get me from A to B on a ride.

How much does something like this cost? And where do I get it?

    Get a Liahona. JK.

I'd ask mtnbiker here. FN Phat bought a Specialized Stumpjumper or something a few years ago that he likes. Personally, I'd visit a bike shop and get fitted and then hit up a Craigslist if you're not looking to spend a bunch of money.

There are a bunch of brands that will fit the bill none really better than the other. Look for the best set of components you can afford and make sure the bike is comfortable.

You probably want a hardtail but don't rule out a dual suspension bike.

Looks like Surfah's putting me on the spot. How much does a bike cost? Good question. You really do get what you pay for. You can start as low as around $400 for something like a Specialized Hard Rock, and go on up to about $3500, where the law of diminishing returns really starts to kick in. My first 'mountain bike' was a Hard Rock Sport, costing around $330, if I remember correctly, around 15 years ago. I rode it a full season all over the nearby singletrack before getting a bike more tailored for significant off-road riding. So if you're mostly going to be on the road but take an occasional trail ride, a lower-end bike will still get you there. As you go up in price, you'll get lighter frames and better components, but if you mostly ride around the block, you won't need a top-end bike.

Major brands to look at include Specialized, Trek, and Cannondale.

Each website will have links to local dealers. I strongly encourage you to get a bike from a dealer, and not from WalMart, Target, or somesuch department store. Even the lowest end bike from a dealer will be much better than a department store bike. Many bike shops won't even touch those bikes because the derailleurs and other components just don't stay tuned up.

What about at a sporting goods store, like Dick's. I just ask because all the bike shops are closed today, but Dick's will be open. We have some time to look today.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

Do you have an rei there? I bet they'd gave better bikes than dick's.

I would rather you didn't. I just looked at their website, and most of the bikes looked like junk. Diamondback and K2 are not great brands. Most of the components are lower quality than I would recommend. (Although if you're just going to ride around the block, some of those might be ok.) And I'd be surprised if there was anyone in the bike shop who really knew what they were talking about. Still, if you want to go, the one bike I saw on the website that you might consider is the Diamondback Response Comp 2010.

                Good luck, and have fun.
