  • Ski Equipment

For those of you with kids with whom you like to ski what is the best way to go about equiping them and yourselves? The Goat clan has now been official skiiers "for two whole years!" Up to now we rent each time we go. It seems that our skiing covers a week in Sun Valley each Christmas and then we probably make it up to our local spot, Pomerelle MTN near Albion, Id (Albion is real close to Elba, Almo and Declo for the geographically challenged) about every other week for January-March.

Next year we will start our youngest manchild when we go to Pomerelle, if he has stopped shitting his pants by then. I am wondering if I should look for some of those cheap spring ski sales or rent ski equipment for all for the season - that is where I am leaning. I don't think I am ready to burst for gear for my wife and myself for another year as we are still figuring the sport out - so to speak.

For the record IPU, I already checked out DI. It had no ski equipment.

Try the ski swaps in the fall. Idaho Falls has a good one and I'm guessing Poky would also.

I'm starting the acquisition of some new stuff as well. Will be checking sites throughout the summer since that's when stuff goes on sale, but mostly having my baby brother do the dirty work on the search.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Poky is a ratthole. I avoid that town as much as I can.

So you would recommend ski swaps over leasing a set from a sports store for the entire season?

Also I gotta get the clan up to Targhee once or twice next year. My in laws got a condo in IF for their weekly temple assignment so it is just a short drive from there.

Try KSL.com and the ski swaps. But like Fly said, I'd rent for awhile. I'd also get a snowboard.

My oldest went to a snowboard this year for the Sun Valley trip. However, on the family trips she was a drag because she couldn't snowboard as fast as her younger sisters could ski. She came back from the dark side and part of my plan to lease ski gear for the season from a sports store is to get her roped into her own gear. I figure if we go in and her sisters are renting gear she will get caught up in the emotion of the moment and then I will have her locked into skiing and staying away from those dope smoking snowboarders. I am not above manipulating my children. Or others for that matter.

If I lived in Utah I would ski at Alta as it don't welcome their kind.

I'm not sure what it cost to lease but their are deals to be had a ski swaps. Also the kid may be skiing now but I would bet my left nut that not to far down the road he will ask for a snowboard. The top of Targhee is one of the most beautiful sites out there, the problem is it's not clear very often up there.

rent them until they stop growing. If they get really good then you might consider investing in skis that would last a few seasons and could be handed down the to the younger kids.

I know you said you already checked DI - so this probably doesn't help.

But I have a friend who's dad always recommended that folks with kids go to DI a week or two after Christmas to outfit their kids. His theory was that a bunch of kids are getting new stuff for christmas and then unload the old gear.

Doesn't help now - but maybe for future reference...

This is a decent approach, but you can also buy for the oldest and hand those down through the different kids. I think that might actually be the cheaper approach.

Also, don't buy new. Buy used at ski swaps.

If you are ever in SLC, then go to the ski trucks place at the State Fairpark. A lot of crap there, but if you are patient and don't mind picking through stuff, you can find some decent equipment for the kids. Most of it is past rental stuff.
