  • Emergen-C Vitamin C supplement

Has anyone else tried these? They are 1000mg Vit C supplements that you mix with water and drink. They come in individual packets, all in a box of around 100 packets.

I noticed that they are not FDA approved, they are a featured product at Wal-Mart, and they are quite popular here in the 'Tah...three things that make me believe that they are basically the next placebo Airborne craze.

I'm also curious about the nutritional content of these things. The content breakdown on the back of each packet lists Vitamin C as the primary ingredient, in the form of zinc ascorbate...1000mg. However, I though the daily recommended dose of zinc was around 10mg.

Yes...I do those quite often. Especially prior too any hard workouts, etc...as well as if I feel a cold coming on...I power those things down.

          No. Just naive.

Excess vitamin C usually just means expensive urine. It may also cause kidney stones and a sort of withdrawal scurvy if you go cold turkey from your prolongued excessive doses.

Is there any truth to the notion that taking those on days when you start feeling sick will help you fight off the cold or whatever it may be? I think that is really the space that is at issue.

People arent taking them simply because they want Vitamin C...they can get that anywhere. They take them because there is an implied healing associated with the megadosage in the packet. Which is why I think it is probably more Airborne than elixir.

Massive doses of vitamin C do nothing to ward off infection.

You nail it in your second paragraph. These items are meant to fleece the well meaning but ignorant public out of their disposable income. See also: beta-HCG, Noni juice, etc.

I read your link but I found no mention of Emergen-C brand fizzy elixir powder. This is a serious thread and the severity and longevity of future colds may hinge on the posts contained herein.

Do warm water gargle daily and eat 1 cup of yogurt daily to ward off infection.

As said earlier, expensive urine that hasn't been proven to decrease symptoms.
