  • Flu Shots

Do you get one? I always do; Mrs. PAC never does. Until this week, we've both avoided the flu for many years. But this week she was laid low, spiking a 103+ fever even after taking acetaminophen. I came down with it a couple of days later, but didn't suffer nearly as much as she did.

I assume with a flu shot one wouldn't get the flu at all (at least none of the strains included in the vaccine), but is it possible that a flu shot also reduces symptoms when one gets the illness?

BTW, any reasons not to get a flu shot?

This whole flu shot thing baffles me. When did they even start giving these things out? Since when is the flu THAT big of a deal that we have to even WONDER what might be in that little syringe they just stuck in your arm? Myself, I won't let them come near me with that.

Do you oppose vaccines generally, or just the one for influenza? And I acknowledge that getting a flu shot may be better for geezers, such as myself, than the younger crowd.

seasonal influenza epidemics kill almost half a million people every year. the vaccination can prevent 70%-90% of influenza related illness at the risk of a sore arm and a very low grade fever. not getting one is silly (unless you have an allergy to chicken eggs).

i get one every year since i have the privilege of being in a higher risk population with a chronic disease. i have not had a fever since i had swine flu two years ago, and it was a long time before that.

man, I so feel you. I've only ever missed the flu shot twice (one of those times being this year), and twice I've regretted it. I missed two days of class last week with a high fever. ugh.

I don't know. But the flu for me is so easy to beat. I just go tanning all winter. When I DO get it every five years, I take some stuff to make me puke, then a strong laxative, take a nap for an hour and it's gone. But how many people are cool with puking and voluntary diarrhea? I understand many wanting the shot. To me it's a complete waste of money, and the fact that so many people I know get the flu DESPITE getting the shot? That just cinches it for me.

Also, if you didn't read my other thread, I don't eat meat or dairy. I basically never get sick.

The purpose of the flu vaccine is to reduce the risk of death from influenza. If you are exposed to a strain, the severity of your symptoms will depend on how robust the immune response you gained from the vaccine. The stronger the vaccine response, the milder the symptoms you will experience. But even those who experience more severe symptoms are much less likely to die or hospitalized if they received the vaccine.

taekwondave, I'm not sure I can empathize with your understanding of the pathology of the flu virus. Your medicinal practices sound very Ancient Greek purging to me.
