    The fastest 5k

I've started doing speed work once a week for the last few weeks. Instead of intervals what I'm doing is a 5k once each week at the fastest pace I can hold without quitting. I'm going to use this thread to record my times and I hope that many if not all of you runners will join me. It was always fun when we did this over on CG even though Piney always destroyed us.

    Here was tonight's run:

    Time was 22:25 for 3.11

    you ran on a track????

This is a good idea. Last night I did a Brick (bike to immediate run) and was to run for 20:00 minutes, so I didn't get in a full 3.1, but next time I will. Things like this keep me motivated to run faster.

Yeah, it's incredibly boring but it's an easy place to go and get it done. The bonus is there are no hills.

I'll give it a try one of these days. All of my interval work lately has been on the bike, so my running speed work has suffered.

22:25 is very fast, btw. Where'd that come from?

It's because it was only a 5k, look at the splits and the HR, it was about to get ugly.

I just want to break 30 min in the my ward's annual beat the bishop 5k fun run

I may be small, but I'm slow.

Tonight I ran in a stiff wind with rain. I felt like I worked harder and thought I might have beat last week's time but... no, I went 22:55.

I finally went and looked at your splits. 197 Max HR?!?! Thats like jackrabbit HR fast.

Do you think if you had slowed your first mile down a tad that you could have held on a bit during during that last mile? 6:52 is very fast.

Definitely. But my goal on those Wednesday nights is to redline and so I just went for it.

Tried a new strategy yesterday. Held back a bit on the first mile hoping I'd have a little more in the tank in mile 3. It did not help. I felt equally as tired in mile 3 as I do when I run all out and my finish time ended up slower than my best by 4 seconds. I think I do best when I just go all out.

Anyway, finish time was 22:29. I am finding these all out efforts to be mentally exhausting. I spend the entire 2nd mile talking myself out of stopping.

So I have been easing back into running (treadmill only at this point) and trying to shed the winter weight I put back on (25 lbs , but I am already down 6 ). Gidget told me I could get fitted and buy some appropriate shoes should I lose some weight first (a sign that I am committed and that the shoes will be a worthy investment). Anyway, I was searching around for a running store that does this and there is one close by. The owner is a biomechanist for the JMU, GMU, and VMI track and XC teams. Beneath his bio was a list of his PRs:

                      5k 14:17
                      10k 30:05
                      13.1 68:00
                      Marathon 2:39:00

Ran a 5k this week at a conference for work. Flattest course ever and at sea level = great times. Ran an PR with an 18:45. 2 years ago I ran a 19:20 on this course, so I am getting faster in my old age.

I ran a 17:23 in high school but I doubt I could get under 25 right now. I'll have to try it sometime when the weather drops below 100. Probably won't be for a few months.

Holy crap that's moving. I can confidently say I will never approach those times. My fastest timed 5ks to date are 26:18 and 26:06. On the latter one I felt like I pushed way harder than the 26:18, and it kicked my butt. When I found out how little time I had shaved (was trying to get in the 25s) I realized I may just have to be content with never being fast.

I admire those of you that can run that fast over prolonged distances.
