    41692 vertical feet

I took the day off yesterday to go skiing with my brother but when he hurt his back this week I was afraid my plans were screwed. After trying to think of something better to do with the day I just decided to go up alone. This was a first and since nobody was with me I figured I would make it into a work out day and see how many vertical I could do in a day. My garmin that I use for biking did a wonderful job of tracking vertical. My legs were noodles by the end and even though the lifts were running for 45 more minutes I had to get off the hill before I hurt myself. It was a beautiful day up there.

good grief. My quads are sore just thinking of it. Looks pretty, though.

Hey, can I borrow your skis? I think I'm going to need them to get out of my front yard. Those or an ice pick.

I've skied on a lot of mountains, and I've never found one that matches Targee. I'm jealous. BTW, I hope you were just on the groomed slope on your way to the bumps. If you didn't ski the moguls there, I've lost some respect for you.

I love shaving over the top of a mogul.

Cowboy I stay away from the bumps any more. My knees just can't take it and when you turn fifty you will understand. I love to find the wide open groomed slopes and just make big fast GS turns down the mountain

That looks very cool, in both senses of the word, RC. Is that Targhee? And wherever it is, how far is that from BYUI? My son, who is up skiing today, will likely enroll this fall and he'd love to know a place like that is within an easy bus ride or drive next winter.

We used to go to Targhee from Ricks all the time. But I had a car. No idea about a bus. Seems like it was an hour or so?

That is Targhee and like FM said it's about 1 to 1:15 away. The best deal they have is Winter Semester they (BYU-I) have a ski class where they take the kids up there and they get a weekly ticket for $300 dollars and for another $29 more they can buy a season pass. Tell him to bring his long underwear.

Amen to that. Moguls wreak havoc on the knees and knees after 50 need tender loving care. I still love a good powder stash however.

I'm only 32, and I don't do moguls for the same reason. I love powder, though.

RC, man I am so jealous. My brother just went last week but I couldn't go with him, so our situations are somewhat reversed.

I am going to try to go sometime in the next week or so.

What size ski do you rock? I am usually most comfortable on 185s. That is shorter, but I enjoy the ability to turn quickly over the ability to go faster.

Do you ski sans poles? I know some folks do that on a regular basis as it definitely helps develop your sense of balance. I have logged around 5-6 full days without poles (not much but after awhile I wanted to switch back) and I can say that it definitely translated when I hit the bumps.

For me, it isn't the knees just yet....it is the lower back. If I hit it too hard, my lower back is sore big-time. I usually hit the bumps a few times before mid-day. I still have lots of energy and I am enjoying myself. By later in the afternoon, I am all about cruising.
                          Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Er, when was the last time you skied? Unless things have really changed in the last few years, 185s would be way long for you. 185s is what I skied on, pre-parabolic era - how is that "shorter"?
