I think I've developed shin splints

It happened on my interval run last week. I was being stupid and ran my intervals the day after my pace run, when I really should have had a recovery run instead. I noticed pain on the inside of my shin, not right over the bone but just next to it, about 3/4 way through my workout. I shut it down immediately and walked the rest of the way home.

Do these things get worse with time? The shut-down was precautionary last week, and I ran a race Saturday and had an easy run last week. Both times I could feel some tightness/soreness in the affected spot, but it was not enough to cause me to change my gait at all or otherwise affect my performance.

If the answer is no, I think I'm probably going to pop an ibuprofen or two before long runs and then run away.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

Ice them after your run too, and rest is never bad. If you think you're getting shin splints, it's not a bad idea to take a few extra days off. If you aggravate the injury, you could be laid up for a while. Of course, this is coming from me, and I need to be extra careful because I'm prone to getting shin splints.
    Not that, sickos.

I battled with shin splints all through high school. Lots of IBP, and lots of playing/running in pain. They healed when I went on my mission and finally stopped running/playing sports on a regular basis.

I didn't have much (any) recurrence until I started playing flag football last fall. As soon as I felt them coming on, I shut it down, and didn't play for a few months. They didn't resurface during Bball last year, and they haven't resurfaced during my recent RATT running stint. I have a feeling, though, that if I start going to play flag football on saturdays, they might resurface.
Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

It sure sounds like medial shin splints. Ice, Ibuprofen and rest will heal you up. If you try to keep running through them they generally get worse and worse. Since you've caught it so quickly I'd bet you could end it with a one week rest.

Good to hear. I felt only minor things on my run last night, so I think I'll take the rest of the week off (swimming and weightlifting instead) and then try for my long run on Saturday. Like I said, the pain is mild enough that it doesn't even change my gait at all.

You might try a dirt trail when you return for that long run. It lessens the pounding which is probably what's bothering you.
