Anyway, how is that, in and of itself, a problem? I mean, other than the widespread loss of productivity and so on. People get sick every year. It happens all the time. It still seems much ado about nothing to me.

The only concern for me, is the implications re: a possible avian flu. Now we've seen how fast these things propagate, and there's no guarantee that an avian strain would be as benign as the swine one has been.
And maybe you shouldn't be. I wasn't until about 2 months ago when I started seeing young healthy people die, nearly die etc... You don't often see people in their 30's and 40's almost die from the regular flu. I am seeing a lot of people in their 30's and 40's on ventilators and circling the drain (though most have survived so far). Add to that that it seems to really be hard on pregnant women and well, that scares me. Sorry. Do most people have mild cases? Sure. But what makes me and you different from the young people who have severe cases? I have no idea and so I do have some fear.

Edit: Oh, and I should add that I've now seen 2 people leave the hospital as paraplegic (actually she died) and quadriplegic after their H1N1 battle.

And then there's this which generated some interesting discussion at work recently:

Well, what the hell do you or Jarid in Cedar know? You are just damn Doctors. I'll stick with my limited knowledge and what information is available to me without contextualization and mock the efforts at prevention.

I am no doctor, not even close, I'm an O.T.. I do get ordered to work with all of the patients in our ICU setting who are just coming off of the ventilator and need strengthening. That's why I see so many of them.

My bad. It is hard to keep all of the Drs. straight.

I was one of them, too. After the string of world ending epidemics that never developed, I'm convinced the WHO is full of shit. I hope nothing ever happens to change my mind.

They never said the epidemics WOULD hit. They said they COULD hit. And if one does hit, and no one is prepared, millions and millions will die...

And on this one - it seems to be as contagious as they warned. Those that weren't exposed to earlier swine flu strains (1950's and 1970's) seem to pass it around like crazy. Thank goodness it hasn't seemed to have mutated over the summer as they feared it could have.

Sorry about your cases. It sucks when it hits home and I hope all the "enlightened" dipshits will pull their heads out of their asses and get vaccinated to try and keep this thing down to a minimum.

You know, you'd expect for the media to be playing up the virus, but I find it pretty irresponsible for healthcare professionals to be contributing to the hype. If anything, you'd think they would want to discourage the drama and burgeoning panic, not contribute to it.

I'm hoping the swine flu can take care of the "Aging of America" problem with social security.

We just can't pay for those old guys!

I think the disease deserves hype. The disease doesn't deserve panic. Simple interventions can prevent significant morbidity and mortality. Failure to do this can result (and has resulted) in significant disease.

I've been taking care of, on average, 3-5 hospitalized patients a day with H1N1. I've protected myself and so I don't fear that I'll get the disease. Take care of yourself and you should be fine.

To say the disease doesn't can't or won't have significant morbidity is ignorant.

I had the piggy flu last March. Dear brother, should I be inoculated? I'm worried that the government is trying to control me.
