    iPhone battery replacement

My son has an old iPhone 5 and its battery had stopped holding a charge. Not wanting to pay the 80 or 100 dollars that an apple authorized repair place charges to put in a new battery, I told my son I would replace it myself (it's my old phone and he is on my plan so he is at my mercy in this regard). I bought a new battery and a couple of tools from iFixit.com for less than $30. It took me about 20 minutes last night to change out the battery. The online guide at ifixit is good (although a little inconsistent with the video they offer). So if you are cheap, like me, this is an easy job that you can do.

Although I will say those 1.2mm screws from inside the iphone are unbelievably small. If anyone wants any more detail, let me know.
    PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Did you remove and reinstall the charging port as part of the process? I have an old 5 with a bad charging port (will only charge if I hold the charger in place--stops charging once I release). I've been tempted to fix it myself so I can turn it into an iPod touch for my kids to play with (or so I can sell it), but I'm a bit intimidated by the prospect of opening it up.

I have a 5 that my 2 year old cleaned in the sink you can practice on. I'll sell it to you for $300.

I had a charging port issue like that, and I solved it by gently cleaning the port out with a toothpick. I guess years of pocket lint built up to the point that the charger didn't have the space to connect properly. If you haven't tried that, it might be worth trying before spending money.

          This.

Also, get a can of compressed air to help you blow it out. You would be amazed how much dust and lint gets in there.

I did not change out the charging port. It still charged easily, but the battery would not hold the charge.

To be honest, I was a little worried about opening that thing up, too. The worst part, in fact, was pulling the glass from the case. That being done, the rest was easy.

Yes, I tried both of these long ago. Sadly, they did not help me.

My refurbished 5 was 3.5 years into its life, and was not being used as my phone when this problem became serious enough to impact its performance. So no, I don't have applecare on my backup apple devices.

I fixed both my shattered screen and my exploded battery for $120 total. Apple wanted, I believe, about $360 to fix it (just the screen), due to the frame having bent a little when the screen was damaged. NOPE!

                        DIY, I assume?

My iPhone 6 battery is getting a little shaky. This thread is convincing me to fix it myself.

I did changed out my wife's iPhone 5 battery DIY with a battery and kit off Amazon. It was easy, and worked great. And I am pretty inept at anything involving tools.

I paid one of the local repair shops (iQue, Bad Apple, can't remember which) to replace a shattered screen on my iPhone 4. It was $80 at the time, and I had no problems with it afterwards. I just made sure they were using quality glass. It may not be as scratch-proof and olephobic as OEM, but I didn't notice much difference.
