For those who have bought fridges recently, did you find the same? In our house right now we have a POFBF and while it has been fine, I'm not sure I understand what makes it better. If anything, I've been a little annoyed at having to always bend way down to get stuff in and out of there. Any thoughts on the advantages/disadvantages of the POFBFs? What other specific things should we look for in a fridge that y'all have found to be helpful?
I think it comes down to individual usage patterns. For me, I'm in the refrigerator a lot more than in the freezer, so having that stuff at standing height is more convenient over time. The French door, full-width refrigerator section is also nice for putting large platters/pizza boxes/etc. into the refrigerator. Also, the greater width of a full-width freezer is nice for some things I do (e.g., freezing things on cookie sheets before bagging them).

I know some people who really like the side-by-side models, though, and wouldn't want anything else. They like having standing-height space for both.

Regarding features that are helpful, one of my favorite features is shelving with a bit of depth/edge to it to catch liquid spills. It can save a lot of cleaning time and hassle. I don't know if that is standard now or not, but I really like it.

We just bought ours from RCWilley during the President's Day Sale (POFBF) and we've really like ours despite having to bend down for the freezer. The extra space from the side-by-side is a world of difference for us despite our small family size (1 child). I cook a lot and the space is more effective for large trays/platters of food. My wife likes the freezer and built-in soda feature. The price surely makes you take pause though. Fortunately I can conveniently turn off the part of my brain that tells me that paying it out over 18 months "interest free" makes sound economic sense.

We're in the process of buying appliances for a house remodel. New fridge and freezer, dishwasher, range top, oven, washer/dryer, and pellet ice maker. I could send a kid to BYU for 4 years for the price of appliances. I could send another kid for the cost of cabinetry.

You bought a pellet ice maker? Like the small ice everyone loves to chew? So jealous.

BTW, we ended up going with the the French door style fridge for many of the same reasons Joe Public said. We rarely use the freezer in the side by side model. And it's not really standing height anyway as the ice maker takes up the top portion of the fridge. I'd rather bend over to get something out of the freezer since that is a rarer occurrence than bending over to get vegetables or fruit out of the produce and crisper drawers in a fridge. Also, it's too narrow to be useful for large items to put in there. Plus, it's the new hotness and everyone seems to be wanting one. I ain't going to lie.
