  • Calling all green thumbs

Need some help identifying plants in my yard. Let's start with this one. Anyone have any ideas what this is? It is a thorny bush. Many of the flowers are starting to die all of a sudden and I don't know why. The green bush is fine. My inner Holden Caulfield would like to save them if at all possible.

    Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Not a green thumb, but it looks like a type of rose. I have roses. They're always stronger in the spring and fall and die a little in the heat of the summer. You can probably help them out with proper watering and Miracle Grow, but I wouldn't stress it too much.

It looks like a tea rose to me, but I don't know much about roses. We have two, and I got them both for a $1 in the Walmart garden clearance parking lot sale.

It's normal for the flowers to last a few days, then die off. Cut off all the deadheads and roses will continue to send out new buds. Let the deadheads die on the plant and the plant will stop producing buds.

Interesting, so cut them off just below the dead bud?

Wow, and I was just thinking what a great CUF success story this was, a loyal member comes to the group with questions and the group responds with helpful advice.

Then you pooped all over it.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Yes, prune them just below the dead bud. Keep it up throughout the summer and you can have blooming roses all through the season, even into October. Not many plants can match that. It doesn't take much effort - just a few minutes once a week and you have a nice set of flowers opening up all the time.

I think roses are too high maintenance. I say cut them out and plant something else.

Amen to that. Rose bushes are a pain in the ass.
