Thanks for the input and advice, except for the exchange between fally and FN.

Looks like I need to study up a bit more, but I think this is something I could possibly do. I am gettin' kinda excited.

bought good paint like Pellegrino suggested (this is hard to do in califronia, but there are ways)

built a temporary paint booth in my garage with thick plastic sheeting and PVC. This included negative air pressure with a room fan and a furncae filter(s). SOUnds hokey but ti worked very, very well.

Primed and painted the doors and drawer fronts with an spray gun. sanded and rolled the cabinet boxes.

Reversed the drawer boxes and put the new fronts on the backs, and trimmed the old fronts. Put the new doors on. It looked good.

Beware though, some years on and my wife now says she wishes they were stained. Arggghhh.
The cool thing about oil based paint is that the brush marks fade out as it dries. You can get almost equal results from the brush as with the paint gun.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

This is generally true, but the quality on my doors is a little better than on my boxes, IMO.

That's why I said almost. Were I do to paint my cabinets, that's how I'd go about it too. A spray finish is always superior. Of course, I suppose someone inexperienced with a paint gun could also end up with a lower quality finish, but I'm sure that's not the case for you.

My wife did ths. Her method was pretty similar to what Pellegrino outlined. We are about 4 or 5 years in, and they still look pretty good, though with a few chips. I don't think she used oil-based paint, but a medium-gloss latex or something. She did take everything apart and sand. She did not build a cleanroom in our garage. I can get details if needed.
