  • Laying landscaping fabric

So, I got two big rolls landscaping fabric from Costco back in August on clearance. Now that the weather has finally cooled off, I'm tackling the first section. I've spent the last 2 hours raking it smooth. I'm taking a break right now, but I'm going to go hoe the weeds out.

We'll see how it looks when I'm done.

Are there any tips or things I should look out for.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

Too late. Good news though. My retired neighbor came over while I was doing it and asked me if I wanted any help since he was "bored." It went a lot faster with more hands. One roll of the stuff covered the entire space save about 8 feet from the next one. It's now down, stapled in, bricked at the edges, and waiting for the fall "harvest' of mulch to fall down. I did go apologize to all my immediate neighbors for the fabric being down with no mulch. Every single one of them said they'd do the same thing, and that they would enjoy watching it get covered up, with a couple guessing how long it would take (mode= 2 weeks, I say three). I also had time to mow the back yard (.35 acres---PHEW), but my push mower is starting to get on my nerves. Because I vacuum up the clippings, I have to stop and empty the bag after every circle. The bag opening is really tiny, so I have to shake it 20-30 to get everything out, and I get covered in pulverized leaves in the process. So, I'm trying to convince the Mrs. to let me sell it and buy something better. I bought this one because it was a floor model, and we had just bought the place and needed something and we had no money. Now, we still have no money, but I'm going to use craigslist and see what I can come up with.

      Having retired neighbors is awesome!

I've never had good luck. Weeds always seem to bust through, then you have a mess trying to pull out weeds through the fabric. I use woodchips and spray often and pull weeks up from the roots.

We kept raking up these long pieces of tied red plastic string. I couldn't quite figure out what they were for. I asked my next-door neighbor if she knew...."I think they put down newspaper bundles over the entire area back in the 1970's, and those must've been the string that kept them bound.
