  • Next home improvement project?

Since the Home Depot guy successfully talked us out of refinishing our deck until spring (the $20 bill I slipped him worked!), I'm thinking about tackling the garage next. Ever since we moved in I wanted to repaint the garage walls, put up some nice shelving, and maybe even epoxy the floor. Until now though, there has been a laundry list of other projects that had priority - like the laundry room.

Since we moved in we have:

painted every surface of the entire house (even ceilings). For some weird reason, just about everything in our house was battleship gray. The previous owner was retired Air Force, but a gray refrigerator? gray porcelin sinks? gray stove hood????

Installed over 1,000 sq feet of hardwood flooring

    New fireplace surround/mantle

    New carpet upstairs and down

    New basement lighting

New kitchen - cabinets, sink/ countertop, appliances

    New windows

New bathroom flooring / new bathroom sinks and counters

    New entry tile

    New light fixtures throughout

New pavers around the front porch

Cut down a bunch of diseased aspens

I've still got some outdoor work to do with the landscaping and I'd really like to redo the exterior of the house, but until the weather warms up, I'm thinking I might get the garage done.

What is the next project on your list? Who else wants to see a home improvement forum?

In the last couple of weeks I've replaced the hot water heater and replaced a bathroom ventilation fan. A Mr. Fix It, I am not. So those were pretty impressive accomplishments for me.

I also had the garage door springs changed and the opener replaced. I wouldn't dare touch the springs, but I actually made an attempt to install a new opener and found out quickly that I was over my head. Best $250 I've spent.

Next on the list is replacing the fence and gate on the side yard. Not a huge project, but I am procrastinating right now in the name of waiting for the rain to come to "soften" up the dirt so that I can dig some fence posts out.

I built a scuttle access to some storage space in the garage for my father this week.

I thought I would like the epoxy floor, but it is a problem in the snow. The snow melts off of your undercarriage and the water will not absorb into the concrete leaving perpetual puddles of muddy water on the floor. It was a unforseen side effect that I would gladly trade for my plain old concrete garage floor.

A complete overhaul of the master bath. And it will turn into a complete overhaul of the kids' bath as well.

I used the shop vac to clean up pine needles in the hallway from our Christmas tree.

I thought that was pretty G until I read this thread.

You vacuuming pine needles is more impressive than me doing the bathrooms because you actually did it. If I were to do the remodel myself, it would end up costing me much more to pay someone in to redo everything that I did wrong - which would be the entire project. It's just cheaper for me to pay someone to do it right the first time.

Did you make sure to check the fuse box before using the shop vac? You wouldn't want to burn the house down!

For our Christmas "Day of Giving", as a team at work (team of about 50 or so) we are finishing a basement for a co-worker as a service project. He has an ailing parent who needs to move in and doesn't have the room. So he is providing materials and work is givfing us paid time off to go work on it. So I spent all day Thursday framing. Fun stuff and bittersweet memories of my home building adventure in Texas.

As to your garage KC, FN Phat and me finished my parents garage while they were out of town. Only the side of the garage that shared a wall with the home was drywalled, so we rocked the rest. We installed some cabinets with a countertop. We installed shelving above the garage door, three shoe racks, and additional shelving on the exterior wall. We added a breaker to the box and put in some additional GFCI plugs closer to the front of the garage. I bought my parents a new refrigerator so we moved their old one into the garage. It was a pretty sweet project. We did it while my folks were in Nashville so it was a surprise. They came home a bit early though before we were completely finished so my dad helped us out. It was winter and we froze our asses off. The mud wouldn't dry so we brought propane heaters into the garage to keep us warm while we worked and to help the mud and paint dry.

                      It was a fun project.

Of all the projects, the only things I had others do were replacing the windows, laying the carpet (I pulled out all the old stuff), and installing the granite countertops. My brother-in-law did most of the tile work around our fireplace and in our front entry. I just cleaned up the grout when he was done laying it.

I know that some people with epoxy floors keep a squeegie around, but I hadn't really thought that much about the water. That might be a problem since I already have a low spot on the floor where water tends to gather.

I do love the look of a nice garage floor.

My life has been a walking remodel for the past six weeks. Up until now it's been a lot of demolition and clean up. Electrician has finished and so tomorrow I'll be installing some hard wood floors and then hopefully Wednesday I'll get the kitchen cabinets in as well. This won't be fun because the kitchen wall is cinder block with plaster. Tapcon here we come!

You're right - that doesn't sound fun (kitchen walls).
