    I'm working with a baptist OB/GYN

He is going to SLC next week for a conference, so Mormonism is on the discussion list right now.

His question was why can Mormons drink diet coke but not coffee? He thought it was because the LDS church doesn't own folger. I don't really have a good response.

I've been asked the "how come Coke but not coffee" question many times. I never have a good answer for it.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

The only true answer is 'because the church require as much.' Anything else is speculation.

Coffee without sugar and milk does not contribute to obesity, diabetes and brain wasting (which is apparently a problem for obese people). Coke contributes to all of that. But whatever. The church has claimed its fighting grounds, and the coke battlefields are not on the map.

How about if we compare Diet Coke vs. coffee with sugar and cream?

This is something I will never understand. That you guys can't drink green tea, but diet jolt is alright.

carbonation is terrible for you. Plus, I think ERC has a theory about how een non-caloried sweeteners contribute to obesity by training us to crave sugar.

I know, and unfortunately that just sounds silly when you say it out loud to somebody. I'm pretty the sounds of "bah bah" instantly go off in their head.

Show me the studies on carbonation.

                  I rarely eat sugar.

This may sound strange, but most Mo's I regularly associate with drink green tea. I was at a Japanese restaurant the other night with some friends from church and the EQP ordered green tea for everyone. I knock down a green tea lemondae from Starbeezy's just about every day. My mom and dad drink it every night before bed.

Because the WOW more about showing devotion to God than it is health.

Yeah, me too. The only "study" I've seen that supports this is my wacky track coach in HS. I've seen several more trustworthy people claim the opposite.

(Side note: I don't drink much soda at all anymore).

Yep. Alcohol in moderation is good for heart health. I get asked about this all the time and I tell people that studies suggest that that are health benefits from 1-2 alcoholic drinks daily.

Links have been established both to low bone density and type II diabetes, and that's just in the diet versions.

Yes, but I imagine you realize that you're hardly a representative sample.

Is it wrong of me to generally distrust every bit of health advice we see? Eggs are terrible for you. No, they're great for you. Tomatoes give you cancer. No, they don't. Fresh fruit is better than dried fruit. No, they're about the same, nutrition-wise.

It's pretty annoying, actually, and it causes me to look at stuff like "studies suggest that there are health benefits from 1-2 alcoholic drinks daily" and question it, a lot.
