To me, guilt that lasts over a long period of time is different than short-term guilt that tells you that you've done something hurtful and that you need to change your negative behavior. Unrelenting feelings of guilt may cut people off from feeling the love that God has for them, but I don't think that rift has much to do with God or their worthiness. IMO, people may mistakenly interpret things they did wrong as the reason they don't feel the love of God, but that logic just doesn't hold up with my thoughts about God's forgiving, loving nature. Relentless feelings of guilt probably won't go away, though, until people correctly identify their source and deal with the hurt they felt when they were first made to feel guilty.
Just my opinion... and these ideas, of course, aren't meant to apply to every situation.
