So THIS is basically as good as a President Monson address at GC?

To suggest that an argument is tired, worn out, and unpersuasive is not an "ad hominem" attack. It simply indicates that it is unlikely to be effective, given the audience. It doesn't concern the "hominem" at all. To tell somebody that "this stupid asshole isn't even worth your time," on the other hand, is an 'ad hominem" attack.

      Hope that helps!
You're going to make a poor attorney at this rate.

The issue isn't whether I was making an ad hominem statement. It's that yours was bullshit. Mine, in my opinion, is a correct assessment of you.

Or, at least it MIGHT be, were it an ad hominem statement . . . but let's not worry too much about that for now. You're trying your hardest, after all.

Odd, then, that you're wasting your time responding to me, since your correct assessment would indicate that I'm not worth it. Looks to me like you don't really believe what you're saying. Maybe you should exercise your right to remain silent. It might make you look a little more credible. I may be destined to be a poor attorney at the end of all this, so I won't charge you for that advice.

          Wrong again, young apprentice.

You're not worth DC's time. However, given my big brother status and inherent duty to stand up for my kid brother, especially in the face of an unprovoked, rather punkish comment, you are absolutely worth my time.

The law gig will probably not work but give it the ol' college try. Please drop more latin phrases as well. Those of us with lawyer parents have never heard them before.

I understand you have great potential in the MLM world.

Ah, I see. HIS time is worth more than YOUR time. Wonder what that says about your employment status.

As for dropping the Latin phrases, might I point out that YOU were the one who introduced the term "ad hominem" to this little discussion? (Would you like me to explain what it means to you? I'm still not sure you get it. Just trying to help!)

            • I guess we all had the BOA in class today. I had forgotten all about Shinehah, Olea and the Kokaubeum. Wowzers.

I do think at some point there is going to be an acknowledgement that Joseph was mistaken about what he thought he was translating. We'll see.

OK, let's set it straight: doctorcoug was an econ major. He had an internship at Lazard Freres. He served a mission in Brazil. He was a state champion runner and varsity track athlete at BYU. The kid even looked like a blonde Tom Cruise when he was younger. If he chose, he would be a wall street star. He's a good kid, too.

He chose, very much at the last academic minute, to squeeze in a few requisite classes and pull off reasonably improbable run to get into medical school. why? because our grandmother was an enormous influence on our lives; grandpa was a doctor; grandma was taken from us by cancer. He wanted to care for others the way he had seen grandma, a registered nurse, care for others.

So, the enormous odds against him getting into a first/second tier med school were accurate. We have a cousin who married a guy that went the D.O. route and it was a better outcome than going to a truly low-tier med school. So he went the D.O. route.

Now, he's doing something all of us really wanted to do: honor our very influential grandparents by caring for others.

...so when you take punk ass cheap shots at my brother, I am going to take the time to address any issues with you.

I'm fully employed, by the way.

Were you doing Lesson #2? Was it part of the manual? I need to look more closely.

That's all interesting and relevant. Thank you for sharing. (Another bit of free advice: check with your brother before volunteering to defend him.)

I take it you really don't know what "ad hominem" actually means, then? Why don't we meet up so I can teach you all about it? Have you ever been to the Red Iguana?

Yes, it was lesson two. But no, those particular scriptures are not suggested by the manual though they are bracket by the ones that are suggested. Our instructor had someone read them. I don't think I'm overstating it to say that it made the whole room uncomfortable. People were very ready to move on to the next item.

But I did walk away with the goal to use gnolaum in conversation. These may be the strangest and most indecipherable passages in the standard works.

No, I do know. I know as surely as I know pigs don't fly. But wait a second. I guess there could always be an exception. I guess until I've inspected every pig who ever lived I can't say for sure no pig could ever fly.

With that caveat, I will say most emphatically that I know there were no golden plates. It is a myth. Believe me, though, that in calling them that I am expressing a high compliment. Those here who know me best will confirm that.

It's funny. I really believe in the "Blink" stuff. I saw your princeps inter pares and my first impression was that you were an asshole.

Then, you posted pictures of your wonderful trip to the BYU/OU game in a private jet (in the middle of a horrific unemployment-driven recession), and when I called you out on the jackass move, your response was that I ruined your day (pussy). You asked that the entire thread be removed (pussy-squared).

Confirming my intial, blink view that you are truly an asshole, you have the gall to call me out on my employment status.

I'm fully employed; I own a successful asset management company in NYC. However, there are lots of people here who aren't. What if I wasn't fully employed? Would that make me less of a person? it seems that you, it would. To make matters worse, your lovely trip to my hometown was paid for by MLM lucre. I doubt you see any problem in trying to equate potential underemployment with self worth. Shit happens to people.

My brother knows I can't help myself but defend him. I have done it my whole life for my kid brothers.
Dude, calm the <redacted> down. I remember you talking about a kinder, gentler Viking. This is the old piss in your sacrament cups Viking.

That's below the belt. Also, referring to the Red Iguana lunch is lame. #1 Rocky's not here to defend himself. #2 Meeting a stranger at a restaurant when you're on a business lunch, especially a stranger who has threatened to call you, what was it, a "fuckwad" to your face upon meeting you, regardless of whether or not you get along, is stupid. No one in their right mind would meet someone that aggressive.

In this thread, Viking has attacked AA and AA has attacked Viking; you are both sullied I think you both need to take this to PMs and work it out. STFU, Lingo. Nobody asked your opinion.

And you still don't know what "ad hominem" means? Guess I won't bother, then.

Wait a minute. How can you be so sure? Maybe Satan took the Book of Abraham scrolls and changed them just to make people who believe in reason and evidence apostatize.
