    Garments on the floor

When I was 19 and preparing to go through the temple, I went to Beehive clothing with my parents and bought my first garments. I came home, went up stairs, and put the bag of garments (in their packaging) on the floor. My mom came in and chided me and told me that I was disrespecting the garment and that I should never put them on the floor. So I put them on the couch.

Fast forward. My wife apparently didn't have that same training. She's been tossing her Gs on the ground with all her other dirty clothes (when the hamper's full, or down stairs, for example). Now I'm wondering if this is more of a home brew teaching, or whether my wife is the one who's been mis-taught.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I don't know where I got the lecture, whether at home or in church, but whenever my G's fall to the floor I make a mad dash to get them back up on the couch or bed or wherever they fell from.

Don't you have to burn them if they touch the floor?

Joseph Fielding Smith also had a beef about the scriptures being put on the floor.

I was told by the temple pres. To avod floor. I don't say anything to my wife if they end up there though because that is just asking for more laundry duty.

As a teen, I had a Sunday School teacher who was absolutely nuts about this. His first day as our teacher, he explained that this was a pet peeve of his, and read us a passage about it from some book (Doctrine of Salvation?). He explained that he would get very upset if he saw our scriptures on the floor, so not to test him. Of course we tested him, and he wasn't kidding. Dude was psycho.

When I was engaged to my wife, I lived for a time with her parents to save money, which was very fun and I would recommend it to anyone. While I was there, I tried to be helpful by doing some laundry. In doing so, I placed a clean load of wash temporarily on a floor. This load happened to include Gs. My future MIL was not pleased.

I don't mean to be gross here, but Gs spend a whole lot of time on very close proximity to something much more disgusting than a floor, so I never have had a problem with dropping them being on the ground.

There is no requirement that garments not touch the floor. It is a personal preference. As such, you cannot be "taught" or "mis-taught."

If you don't want your garments to touch the ground, have at it. If others let their garments touch the ground, have at it.

I will say that if you don't want your garments to touch the ground, don't do the following things:

                  1. Live in South America or third world countries where laundry is done by hand on a rock or other hard surface. You will likely be very offended.
                  2. Visit one of the places where garments are made.....where thousands and thousands of garments are sewn together and move all over for packaging and distribution....like most other clothing/textile factories that churn out large volumes of clothing. You will likely be very offended.
                  Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Neither my parents or the temple president ever taught me this (though I can't ever remember seeing my parents' garments on the floor), but my trainer didn't like the fact that I set my mesh laundry bag on the floor, as it held my dirty garments and they could touch the ground through the holes in the mesh. That was the first time I'd ever heard this theory.

We shouldn't let the scriptures touch the floor.

                        Sincerely,

The Church, which sponsors scripture mastery competitions for seminary students, thereby causing thousands of kids to destroy the spines of their scriptures so that the book will open more quickly, as well as crumple up the pages that contain the scripture mastery verse, as well as turn their scriptures into a coloring book by block marking page after page. After all......it is critical that we are able to find 1 Ne 3:7 in less than a few seconds. That skill will come in handy throughout our Church career.

Despite the fact that I was actually told this by a member of the TPres when I went through, I have officially reached a point where I don't believe in anything that is not in print or has not been personally revealed to me. And I keep the latter stuff private.

When I was first endowed, pre-mission, my bishop suggested that I respect the garments and that I should avoid throwing them on the floor. It was more about the spirit of the thing. Notwithstanding the uptight reactions of some people who over-do that approach, it makes sense to me.
