• Favorite spiritual song

not found in the the LDS Hymnal? When you seek solace, comfort or inspiration in music and it is not found in the Hymnal, where do you turn?

On occasion, I listen to the entire Messiah in one sitting. Occasionally using the scriptures as I follow along. I always come away feeling strengthened.

I have always loved the Four Seasons. It's not that they're particularly spiritual or religious, but they always brighten my day.

Though classical music can have a certain spirituality, sometimes I look for a little lighter fare. I've always loved the Johnny Appleseed song, "The Lord is Good to Me." A simple declaration of gratitude.

Another is the Violent Femmes song, "Jesus Walking on Water." On first blush, it would seem that this song is written as sarcastic or in a mocking tone, but it's a little known fact that Gordon Gano is a devout Baptist. A fun song that isn't cheesy Christian pop.

My God is an Awesome God.

    Seriously though, Come Thou Fount.

At many Catholic funerals, one particular hymn that is sung is On Eagles Wings. It's a song that I'd like to see in the LDS hymnal.

I love the messages of these 2 songs.
"The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

"They talk about the economy this year. Hey, my hairline is in recession, my waistline is in inflation. Altogether, I'm in a depression."

"I like to bike. I could beat Lance Armstrong, only because he couldn't pass me if he was behind me."

If you're going to throw Live out there what about Lightning Crashes?

Another serious contender is Buckley's Hallelujah.

Lightening Crashes is excellent. I like Rufus Wainwright's Hallelujah as well.

This is a song I stumbled onto on a Pandora station (barbershop, of all things) and this guy is/was a member of the Four Voices group. If you can ignore the faces of the choir and listen to his voice and the arrangement, maybe you'll get the chills like I always do hearing this:

Until I figure out how to embed YT video, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWgHO8TcmSQ

My favorite, however, is Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. Along with just about everyone else. But sometimes popular picks are just that for a reason. One of my lifetime musical highlights was singing the Wilberg arrangement with the combined choirs at BYU...so incredibly powerful.

I believe UD might have been in on that as well, if he wasn't skipping it to lay down vocal tracks for our album.

Watching this video always gives me chills.

Of course I am a big Hallelujah fan as well

This thread is impossible to answer, since all the greatest music is spiritual, and none of it is in the Hymnal.
When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

If there is not at least one song in the hymnal you find spiritual you are more jaded towards the LDS Church than I ever imagined.

I didn't say that. I just wouldn't count them as among the greatest spiritual music. Sorry. (Most even nominally musically literate people agree with me.)

I love the most that always agree with you. I try to envision what they look like at times.

Anyway, I think one of the most spiritual songs ever is in the hymnal, The Star Spangled Banner.

YOhio didn't say anything about the LDS Hymnal containing some of the greatest spiritual music. He simply asked for spiritual favorites outside of the hymnal. And seeing as how 99% of the world's population is unfamiliar with the hymnal, I do appreciate your taking the opportunity to point out that most musically literate people agree with you.
