    Girls Camp

Long time lurker - first time new threader. My 13 year-old daughter is going to girls camp this morning -not a big fan of this tradition. When we took her gear over to the home of the YW leader last night to pack it in a trailer, I just happened to glance in her cooler. I found a 4-pack of Starbuck's Frappuccino. When I asked her what she thought she was doing - she answered "Dad, I would never drink that. I just want to see the look on the leader's face when I pop one open around the camp fire." I didn't let her take it.

The question is this: Should I be worried? Or, should I be proud that my daughter is a chip off the old block?

Interesting, that you are not a big fan of girls camp?

    What about it bothers you?
Let's get on with the gettin' on....

Probably a little of both, but then I think all parents should be simultaneously proud and worried when their children take up their habits, behaviors, or personality traits.

We can't stand girls camp at our place. This is my daughters 5th and last year.

Our Stake has done their best to take absolutely any fun out of Girl's Camp whatsoever.

It has gone so far that my daughter (who is a Youth Camp Leader this year) has 35 first year girls she is in charge of. She has to give a devotional one night and was asked to put everything including her testimony on paper and had to submit it to the Stk YW Presidency 2 weeks before camp. She has to read what she prepares. There will be no inspiration while you are at camp regarding your testimony. If it isn't on the paper it doesn't get shared.

There is an adult leader in the stake that wasn't asked back to camp this year because she let her youth dance out in the rain last year at camp in an unexpected rain shower. The shower lasted about 10 minutes less than her talking to by a member of the Stake Presidency.

I am glad that this is our last year with the oldest. Saddened that next year is the first year for our youngest.

That really sounds terrible. I'm not sure how that would be inviting. There are several girls that I know that got to know the church and later converted after first having gone to girls camp. I can't imagine that your stake's girls camp would be a place the girls would want to take their non-member friends.

I think there are many good things that come from girls camp - many have a great experience. Those that run it for our girls go a little far in their organizing/control. They are very specific as to "long sleeves", swimsuits that are one piece - but not bikini cut at the bottom, mandatory camelbak - no water bottles for the hike. When I finished reading the list of what to bring and what not to bring, I was irritated. I'm pretty reasonable, but they take a lot of the fun out of it.

I am going for 2 days this year in a support role. The good thing about it is that I can go for about a 8 mile run up into the wilderness to offset the craziness.

And Random: Your kid is bringing a personal cooler to camp? That isn't camping.

I have volunteered to help at camp every year and have never been taken up on it.

There are things she likes about camp, don't get me wrong. She enjoys the bus ride up with the girls, she enjoys the meals with the other girls. She enjoys not falling asleep at night and chatting with the girls.

She also enjoys the testimony meeting with just the girls and leaders from our ward in it.

She doesn't like everything else that the Stake does.

You can't stand it, and you know ahead of time you can't stand it, but participate anyway -- knowing that you're gonna mitch and boan about it afterwards. Makes no sense.

Don't let your youngest go. Just tell her it's a waste of time and give your reasons. BTW......if it was such a horrible experience for your oldest, why did she continue to go and you continued to allow her to go?

                            zing.

I just wish girls camp offered the same experience for my daughter that Scout camp offers for the Young Men.

She gets a little burnt when the YM come home and talk about all the fun they had at camp. Fishing, canoeing, archery and all that type of stuff.

At Girls camp they go on a hike, and they tie a quilt (which she doesn't enjoy but she thinks that is their attempt at fun) and then the rest is all spiritually focused.

For her it feels like a week of Sacrament type stuff.

My wife is participating at GC this month. I think she is addressing the girls.

I am speaking at this year's Youth Conference and am excited about that, too. Plus, we get to go river rafting for a day.

It is really fun to work with the youth. Hopefully, the bad acts of a few won't ruin it for the majority of the adults who are truly there to have fun and help the kids.
