    Release-time Seminary

So THAT is why they refer to it as "release time"....

My BIL knew this guy and knows the girl, having just graduated from LPHS in May. Yikes.

I thought I read in the DNews that the guy, or at least his lawyer, is claiming that it was consensual. What is the law in Utah on stat rape?
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Stories like this bring back bad memories of a couple of the borderline whack jobs I had as released-time seminary teachers back in the day. I like to think that jerks like this are extreme aberrations.

        I would hope they were.

Sixteen? Crap, that is REALLY young. I don't care if she looked like jail bait, sixteen is basically a little girl.

I don't doubt that she had a big crush on her teacher, etc, so I am not suggesting that the guy necessarily coerced her.

It just seems really messed up to me.

No kidding. And a seminary teacher? I wonder how fast the High Council approved that excommunication - with or without influence from higher up.

I work with the Young Women in my ward and TD is right. Sixteen is very young. I also have a 12 year-old daughter. Words fail me. I never condone violence or vigilante behavior, but I think it's safe to say that this guy should be very careful when he goes out in public.

It doesn't just seem really messed up to you, it IS really messed up. Period.

That POS was in a position of trust - he was the seminary Principal for crying out loud. And it isn't as if it was just a one time "mistake". The guy was trading sexually explicit texts with her before having sex on multiple occasions. Evil is a strong word, but this guy is pretty damn close, if he's not already there.

I will raise you one. My wife is in the YW presidency and one of the girls she works with was recently raped in a similar context (i.e., not forceful but statutory taking advantage type). It was all I could do to keep myself and my firearms at home. Same for the bishop. It was important to sit back and let my emotions cool after I heard about it.

We all know this is a very isolated incident. That doesn't lessen the trajedy or those involved.

I dont' suspect "aluf" and "mullah" folks to be calling for the elimination of the release time seminary program or call for the heads of the leaders who called this guy to his calling.

This just shows how ridiculous all the calls were for BYU to drop it's athletic programs when the "sex scandals" occured.

Hell, who cares even if it was a one-time mistake. Having an affair with a woman my own age would be a one-time mistake that I would not expect to be forgiven of by my wife. That kind of thing? No excuse. Ever. If you can't keep it in your pants to that extent, then you have some serious problems.

I agree that the guy is bad, but I wonder what sort of texts she was sending him. In no way do I condone this type of behavior, but it brings up the age old question of what is the status of the victim? Was it really consensual, and are there text messages that support that theory?

Once again, don't confuse my question as a dismissal of the POS's behavior or as suggesting that in some way the girl was responsible. The guy should pay dearly for his actions and I hope that the girl isn't messed up for life because of this.

This is why I said I have two very firm rules to avoid such mistakes.

You never allow yourself a double take on.

                          1) any female under 19
                          2) any female wearing a wedding ring

I never had that much fun in seminary. But I will say release time is still harder to attend than early morning.

The girl in this is certainly not the innocent little victim people have portrayed her to be, yes she is 16, but this *affair* went on for months. She could have put a stop to it after the first *rape* and called police, and none of the other trysts would have happened.

Yes the guy is despicable, having sex with a 16 year old girl who has entrusted you to be some form of mentor is certainly sick and twisted, but after the first time, and then after all the texts, and phone calls, well....... Gotta believe the girl is not such the innocent little victim, prolly kept the dude on a short leash and when the lid was blown and she found out she could hang the guy, she did.

Terrible deal for the mans family to be put thru this, terrible deal for the girls family to be put thru this, but I am sticking with they are both guilty of a terrible doing and are both victims of a sad, sad, tale.
Let's get on with the gettin' on....
