Abandoned LDS Churches

Cool thread. This isn't as striking as the building in the OP, but the original American Fork Second Ward Meetinghouse was built in 1904. It was sold abandoned in 1984 and now houses Bigelow and Company Organ Builders.

Let's see here. Through this thread I have learned that the church isn't actually shrinking, but the rate of growth has slowed. Also, the building in DC wasn't sold because the church was shrinking ("because the church was not thriving at the time"), rather it was sold because the church selected a different location.

YW. I guess you're right. It sounds like they sold the building because the Church was engaging in white flight. Since the neighborhood was "in decline" they thought they better get out rather than try to help the people in that neighborhood.

In any case, I think it's natural to assume that the growth rate would slow just before the Church actually starts to shrink--no?

To be honest as my travels take me through many rural LDS communities I have spotted many old LDS Chapels that have been turned into homes.

A lot of these homes are certain to have great satellite reception, with a dish large enough to receive direct communication from Planet Kolob.

Here's a building in Idaho Falls that the church abandoned to the Salvation Army. Built in the 30s, it was sold by the church in the 90s (no doubt in response to a declining neighborhood). Looking back, I remember tutoring kids in one of the upper rooms just a year or two after it sold.

A lot of these homes are certain to have great satellite reception, with a dish large enough to receive direct communication from Planet Kolob.

I am hoping that the church will sell off abandoned these old c-band satellite dishes so I can pick up one cheap. There are lots of Free-To-Air (FTA) channels on c-band and I could cut my cable.

Yes, the church is guilty of white flight in this case. If they had kept the building I would be attending a cool ass church in a cool ass location.

BTW, I've heard the Columbia Records tie-in was something akin to corporate blackmail: the Moonies said if you help us screw the mormon church we'll not screw you. Allegedly they made the same offer to the mormons (we'll give you your church back if you help us get a better one), but we said "no." #Followtheprophet

I live in the city and the neighbors said they would get mad if I put up an OTA antenna... some of them have dishes on their roofs so I guess they don't have a problem with those.
