Question about Interview for New Calling

Went to lunch with a couple of lurker friends of mine today (hi friends!) and one of them brought up a somewhat strange occurrence in a recent interview to extend a new calling. He and his wife were asked to meet with the stake president. The stake president brought my friend in the room first, wife stayed outside. The stake president then proceeded to give a full temple recommend interview. Friend already has an active TR. After he passes the TR interview, stake president proceeds to ask the wife to come in so he can issue the call with both present. Friend says no need to invite the wife, I think I know what the calling (EQP) is and I'm not interested. Stake president confirms that is the calling he was going to extend.

Have any of you ever experienced this before? I know that inviting the wife is common, but what about the full TR recommend before hand? Stake president should know (and can certainly find out) that friend has an active TR. Friend felt, and I tend to agree, that the TR portion was a bit of a manipulation technique by the SP. How could you reject this calling when you just answered that you support and sustain your leaders? The wife thing is a little manipulative as well - pressure you to accept the calling so you don't disappoint your wife, who looks up to you as a righteous priesthood holder.

If the person is 18 months into a recommend or something like that, I guess I could see a stake president opting to verify a person's current status before issuing a high-profile calling. A full interview isn't the only way to do that, of course.

The same thing happened to me when I got called to be EQP here. I didn't see it as manipulative; it's a big deal and I think he was just "trust but verifying" that all was well.

Maybe my stake president was just more chill, but he and I just had a chat. He did ask if I had any doctrinal concerns, but that was about it before inviting my wife in. And this was after I'd been in the ward/stake for only 6 weeks.

I like that you said, no thanks. Good on you.

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

Last year I was called to EQP as well, and was only asked if I was still worthy for a TR before the call was extended. Not sure if that was just because it was my brother extending the call or not.
