I think my thoughts on these changes are quite reasonable and positive towards the HCO, but I have been told not to comment so I will withhold my perspective.

      • New Honor Code just announced:

        https://policy.byu.edu/view/index.php?p=26

        Church Educational System Honor Code

Brigham Young University and other Church Educational System institutions exist to provide an education in an atmosphere consistent with the ideals and principles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. That atmosphere is created and preserved by a community of faculty, administration, staff, and students who voluntarily commit to conduct their lives in accordance with the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ and who strive to maintain the highest standards in their personal conduct regarding honor, integrity, morality, and consideration of others. By accepting appointment, continuing in employment, being admitted, or continuing class enrollment, each member of the BYU community personally commits to observe these Honor Code standards approved by the Board of Trustees “at all times and in all things, and in all places” (Mosiah 18:9):

        Be honest.
Live a chaste and virtuous life, including abstaining from any sexual relations outside a marriage between a man and a woman.
Respect others, including the avoidance of profane and vulgar language.
Obey the law and follow campus policies.
Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, vaping, and substance abuse.
Participate regularly in Church services (required only of Church members).
Observe Brigham Young University’s dress and grooming standards.
Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code.
Much simpler than the old one. All the extra verbiage about what gay students can and can't do is gone.
"There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."
"It's no secret that the great American pastime is no longer baseball. Now it's sanctimony." -- Guy Periwinkle, The Nix.

          • Seems like the addition of "between a man and a woman" is unnecessary.

Just: Live a chaste and virtuous life, including abstaining from any sexual relations outside marriage.

            But overall I like it.

Now they need to update the dress and grooming standards.

maybe not. what does campus policy say? because of the dress and grooming standards and campus policy sections, the honor code is so much more than how it is laid out there.

                  • Yeah- I thought the "between a man and a wife" part was weird too, and then I realized that if a man and a man are married they still can't have sexual relations and be in compliance with the honor code as written and it made much more sense.

Do you honestly think that BYU would allow something that would make you lose your church membership? Seriously?

Yes, being consistent with the teachings and values of the sponsoring institution is byu being byu.

At first I agreed with smr and others that "between a man and a woman" was superfluous, but now I've come around to Lebowski's point. If that weren't added, a gay student could get a same-sex marriage and then engage in gay sex and be in harmony with the honor code. That's not going to fly at BYU, or in the church.

What if they are not members of the LDS church. Does BYU not accept non-Mormon gay married students?

Nope. See the new honor code about being marriage between a man and woman.
