Byu gets the benefit of church culture but doesn't do any pro active in a positive sense. Making very key act like a nun isn't a proactive positive step. We need real world approaches.Originally posted by Bo Diddley View PostYou seem to be lumping the Church and BYU together, and then separating them again as it suits you. And for all your railing on the HC, isn't enforcement of the "puritanical" standards a large factor in keeping BYU students safe?"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Wow, Topper just got destroyed in this thread.
I was reading some FB posts of some exmos on the situation and they kept referring to byu's rape culture
BYU has a rape culture in the same way that UofU has a national championship culture.

If you think so, then you won't understand why non-LDS think BYU's reaction is weird and awkward. I am rather unimpressed with the logic. The problem isn't the incidence rate of sexual assault, which given the conservative social climate of the LDS happens, but how BYU administration addresses problems when they arise and how they treat victims. The perception and the failure to be on the cutting edge is the problem. One would assume the smallish Southern Virginia University has a similar incidence rate but it immediately adopted an amnesty policy. BYU still has adopted no amnesty policy, weeks, months later.Originally posted by Moliere View PostWow, Topper just got destroyed in this thread.

Perfect way to handle it. Get the right people involved (including mostly women on the committee). Go slowly and carefully and be thorough and comprehensive. God bless Kevin Worthen.
The current upheaval at Baylor shows how seriously schools & the authorities are taking Title IX compliance.
I imagine that if one of these alleged victims brings a Title IX lawsuit against the byu, then things will move more quickly. The byu has already been accused of using Title IX as an excuse for honor-code investigations (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/...b0060ccda3b7fa)
I'm not saying that I think this will happen, but it definitely seems like a possibility to me."More crazy people to Provo go than to any other town in the state."

Were I the judge, the dad's letter would have added at least an extra year beyond the three years + probation (the minimum I would have imposed). At least we know the kid has never been violent, including the night of the incident. I guess he lovingly stripped and penetrated the helpless victim.Originally posted by mpfunkWhen I said this isn't a BYU problem, but a societal problem I meant it.
Good God this is awful.

His poor father doesn't have to hide the snacks anymore.
The rapist also only got 6 months in jail after being convicted of rape because anything else would be too harsh. The prosecutors argued for 6 years. Not to mention the horrible comment that his son was to go lecture about binge drinking and promiscuity? This isn't about alcohol or sexual promiscuity, it is about his son raping an unconscious woman.

lol. That dad is allergic to the word 'rape' I guess. Had he uttered it, the letter may have had an ounce of weight to it."I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! I'll make his whole brand go under,"
