I read the book because I am close to quite a few people with doubts and I wanted to be able to help them (they wanted help). Otherwise the subject isn't terribly interesting to me.

I'll remember this the next time you're in SoCal and try to set up lunch with me.

Oh, lighten up big guy. If someone wants to set up lunch with you that's about as sincere an expression of affection as there is.

Moreover, SU has been fiercely protective of his self-proclaimed status as a former adherent who has left it all behind. And yet, he has now entered the pantheon of the Tanners and their ilk. I don't care that he has, and I suspect his book is like his posting here, which is to say interesting if not always persuasive, but I think he should be honest with himself and us as to what this means concerning his position.
I don't expect you to agree, but over time, it has become pretty clear that the Tanners have been some of the most honest voices in Mormonism for the last fifty years. At bare minimum, they've been more honest than the Church. In the long run, I think the LDS Church will be better because of the Tanners (and others).

Tanners: LDS church isn't true because of peepstones, Book of Abraham, polygamy, Book of Mormon DNA, etc.

Givens: ignore all that stuff, the church is still a great place to be, it has unique, expansive doctrines about God, faith is awesome and Mormonism is as good as anything else

SU: I'm fine ignoring all that stuff, but the church still sucks as it's behind the times on social issues, and I don't see anything positive in matters of faith, so religion only serves to hold mankind back
