They shouldn't make up stories about him. That's the issue. It is dickish for the church to hold him up like a puppet when he is simply ill.
It's like when he was hospitalized and the church announced that he was late to conference because "his wife needed him." That was a lie, plain and simple.
It's one thing not to tell all the details. It's another to lie. There was an entire devotional given about how Monson is such a great husband for being late to conference "because his wife needed him." This was misinformation deliberately spread by the Church to hide his illness.
I also have it on good authority that his dementia has progressed to the point that he is cursing like a sailor at his 24-hour nurses.
a 90 year old with dementia could not conceivably require rest before five public speaking engagements in two days? u r dumb
dementia seems like a weird thing to be a dick about

LDS Church spokesman Eric Hawkins said LDS President Thomas S. Monson, age 87, skipped a meeting with Obama to preserve his strength for the church's General Conference this weekend.
"President Monson remembers fondly his visit to the White House to present President Obama with his personal family history in 2009 (yeah right--doubt he remembers anything). Because of the need to preserve his strength for this weekend's General Conference, it was felt that the logistics of meeting away from Church offices, with the walking and the waiting periods associated with a presidential visit, would regrettably not be conducive to President Monson's participation," he said.
This was about hiding his dementia (much like a totalitarian government would) and also about not causing embarrassment.

I've read a book or two of his poems and observations, many of which are really good, if a bit touchy feely. I think I posted this a few years ago, but I used this Rumi quote in a Gospel Doctrine lesson on Paul's statement that we should "glory in tribulations":
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
