Yes, liberals are hypocrites about religion. I've said it before on CS but I'll repeat it again. The Muslim religion is much more bigoted and hurtful to women and gays than Christianity and Judaism. Why liberals embrace the Muslims while disparaging other religions is beyond me.

Maher clearly thinks he's in the minority on this issue on the liberal side. I'm not sure the number of commentators has anything to do with anything. Not sure who you are referring to as the liberal in that debate. Maher appeared to be condemning Islam (the religion) as a whole because of several of the ideas espoused by it (or sects there of) and/or many of its members. Affleck seemed to be saying that you cannot condemn Islam (the people) because the majority live peaceful and productive lives. I do think that they were talking past each other a bit.
There is a poster on here that sounds a lot like Maher in regards to Mormonism ("It's evil"). Although the majority of its members live peaceful and productive lives.
So at what point can you condemn a people based on the view of their beliefs/teachings or on the actions of a minority of the group? I know the standard conservative argument about liberals ignoring Muslim atrocities and focusing on Christian peccadilloes. I'm not unsympathetic to it. But I just don't see a majority of liberals doing that. What's more, it's the media highlighting those atrocities.
