Why Americans dislike Mormons slightly less than atheists and Muslims

Any thoughts as to why Mormons rank below everyone except atheists and Muslims?

As a child, I was often taught that Mormons are most persecuted because they are right about everything. I would totally dig this logic if Muslims and atheists were reversed on this chart.

I assume that Mormons are so low for the same reason that Evangelicals are so high. There are a lot of Evangelicals out there and they don't like Mormons. The only thing Evangelicals dislike more than Mormons are Atheists and Muslims, and I'm not sure about the Muslims. My oldest daughter's best friend is a guy from an evangelical household. He has been told that he can't marry my daughter because she is a Mormon. They are nice people, and quite friendly, but they don't like Mormons.

Maybe it has something to do with missionaries knocking on people's doors early Saturday morning.

I thought we were going to give Sooner his own thread to put everything in? I also thought he quit, at least this means SU can return!

Come on dude. I'm not criticizing the church. I'm asking why people don't like Mormons. I'm a Mormon campaign has clearly failed. Mormons have an image issue.

                Matthew 5:11

11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

Clearly? I think you clearly have a bias that is coloring your interpretation of the data.

I am objective. I am way more pro-Mormon than the average American.

The people who donate 10% of their income to the church as well as huge amounts of time are not objective. Mormons, in general, are disliked--based on good data.

So you're a glass half empty kind of guy then aren't you? I say Mormons are generally liked.

                        No. I'm analyzing the data.

Hindus are neither liked not disliked (on average)

Mormons are slightly disliked on average but significantly more disliked than Jews, Catholics, and Baptists.

Why do you think Mormons are unpopular compared to most other American religions?

That 2% that you're quibbling over is well within the margin of error of the survey.

I don't see the numbers as an indictment of unpopularity in America. I think you're overstating the differences. If you were to track the image of Mormonism over time objectively, you would come to the conclusion that we've made huge strides.

Ok. Mormons have made huge strides. What is holding them back?

Probably #1 is overcoming bias. People have many misconceptions. As the survey noted, when people actually knew someone who was Mormon, perceptions were better. This takes time. That said, I don't think we worry we're not as popular as the Catholics yet.
