  • I caught The End of the Tour last weekend and highly recommend it. There's a brief scene where David Foster Wallace played by Jason Segel talks about porn that turned out to be better than just about anything I've heard in church on the subject.

    • Interesting stat on a similar topic: 150,000 Ashley Madison accounts from Utah revealed in hack. Some individual city #'s included also.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

[...] according to radical feminist theory, pornography users should hold more gender non-egalitarian attitudes than non-users of pornography. We tested this basic hypothesis across five variables pulled from American General Social Survey data and did not find any supportive evidence. In fact, pornography users were more supportive of women in politics, more supportive of women working outside the home, and more supportive of women's access to abortion, than were non-users of pornography.
It's important to keep in mind that evidence of correlation should not imply causation. My colleagues and I think our findings are best explained by third-variable factors. There are certain groups of people (e.g., religious, social, and political conservatives) that avoid pornography use who also tend to hold more gender non-egalitarian attitudes. If we assume that there is no relationship between pornography use and gender egalitarianism, then including these people will lead to a positive bias in the results (i.e. more supportive gender-egalitarian attitudes among pornography users). Our findings may simply reflect the presence of people who avoid pornography use and hold more gender non-egalitarian attitudes in our sample.

          • Interesting reboot. Playboy has decided to become like every other mag (Maxim/Tattoos/Hot Rods, et. al) at the Circle K. I guess it really is all about the articles now.

I has always been about the articles with me. Even as a 7 year old.

I liked the decision-making editor's observation about his decision: “Don’t get me wrong,” Mr. Jones said of the decision to dispense with nudity, “12-year-old me is very disappointed in current me. But it’s the right thing to do.”

                      • It is difficult, in a media market that has been so fragmented by the web, to imagine the scope of Playboy’s influence at its peak. A judge once ruled that denying blind people a Braille version of it violated their First Amendment rights.

I'd also say that print magazines are passé at this juncture. The only time I'm interested in them is when I don't bring reading material to the airport (not the pron ones, sickos!).

Nice try at a reboot, Playboy. There's a whole host of PG-13 type men's mags out there. I doubt your articles will be good enough to stand out.

I'm pretty sure it was Hustler and not Playboy with the "I never thought it would happen to me" letters to the editor. I remember a kid in our neighborhood that had some Playboys and he would charge others $.25 to look at them, things were simpler then.
