Some talks about Christ would be nice...especially around Xmas.Originally posted by Sleeping in EQ View PostWhat topics do you want to see taken up in sacrament meeting talks?"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. In all seriousness, I'd love some Old Testament history talks. Also, I'd appreciate an honest talk about why death sucks."Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.
The rest of us rarely bother to think about our actions." --Solon

Thanks for the serious response. I'm looking to shake things up and insert some progmo agenda items into sacrament meeting....Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostIn all seriousness, I'd love some Old Testament history talks. Incorporating non-traditional families, I.e., single parents, singles, children, but not the single adult representative."Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."
Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

I appreciate it when people share personal stories rather than telling me what Elder Ballard et. al said in the April 2009 General Conference. Although, sometimes you get some odd stories, the effect is better than correlated chloroform in print.Originally posted by Sleeping in EQ View PostThanks for the serious response. and Easter. As a church, we really sleep on talking about Christ around Easter.Originally posted by Moliere View PostSome talks about Christ would be nice...especially around Xmas."They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.
Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Another example of me attending a different church than many on CS. In my experience, Christmas talks and Easter talks rarely focus on any topic other than Christ.Originally posted by DrumNFeather View Postand Easter. I think in my particular ward, the Bishop just goes through his topics and assigns them to a week fairly quickly, not taking into account when certain holidays are etc. Not a criticism, he has a lot on his plate.Originally posted by smokymountainrain View PostAnother example of me attending a different church than many on CS. Yes, maybe an ensign article could be assigned, like:Originally posted by wuapinmon View PostIn all seriousness, I'd love some Old Testament history talks.

(Under… "Do we know how the earth’s history as indicated from fossils fits with the earth’s history as the scriptures present it?")
I like how it explains horses and the BoM as well...
Brigham Young sought information concerning the occurrence of horse fossils, especially in America. His purpose was to answer critics who challenged the mention of horses on this continent in the Book of Mormon. Everybody knew, said the critics, that there were no horses in America until the Spaniards introduced them. Professor Marsh’s research of horse fossils, however, clearly established the presence of modern horses in America long before the appearance of Spanish people in America.

"I honestly believe saying someone is a smart lawyer is damning with faint praise. The smartest people become engineers and scientists." -SU.
"Yet I still see wisdom in that which Uncle Ted posts." -creek.

I would love to see more lead up to Christmas and Easter. As a whole we do jack shit for Easter. A few of the wards I've been in didn't even have so much as a choir number for the program. In one ward the congregation sang "We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet."
I'll be back with more suggestions.Dio perdona tante cose per un’opera di misericordia
God forgives many things for an act of mercyAlessandro Manzoni
Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

This is my experience although we do have a special Easter and Xmas program, both of which are nice. But the main topic in December was tithing.Originally posted by pellegrino View PostI would love to see more lead up to Christmas and Easter. As a whole we do jack shit for Easter. It would go a long way if, when extending an invitation to speak, that the counselor reminds the speaker that Sacrament is a worship service and therefore any talk should be centered on Christ or Christlike attributes regardless of the topic at hand. It would be good also if the counselor mention that personal experiences are often the best way to teach principles and they also make talks much more interesting. At least, if I were a counselor that's probably something I'd do.....oh and I'd get rid of the talk on a talk thing."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. "...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."
